For those who would be interested in Cooking on a Towboat you would apply as for any other position.  Just state "Cook".

What would you need to have besides plenty of experience cooking ?

1) A ServeSafe Certification which is obtained by taking the course and passing the test.  Generally a Manager's level Certification.

2) You have documentation of a tuberculosis skin test, hepatitis A & B shots.

3) A TWIC Card (Transportation Workers Identification Credential)

4) A First Aid and CPR training certificate

5) A resume (preferably a website with resume and photos (of all above) of you working in commercial kitchens of restaurants) and references if you can provide them.

Companies hire both men and women for these positions.  On most Boats the Cook has his own private room.  Cooks would  get up around 3am to have breakfast for 10 crew members ready by 5am. (this will vary some depending on the Boat & Captain)  Breakfast would  be 1 hour.   Lunch from 11am to 12pm and Dinner from 5pm to 6pm.  Clean up allow an hour and then the Cook  goes to bed for the night.

I'm stating this as so many Boat jobs are for men and women may feel left out.

What would be good to have is a Cell that will WIFI hot-spot for a laptop (recipes on jump drives) and your clothes for a 28 day hitch.  You will basically be a month on and a month off.  Some companies have different schedules for women.  Like 14 days on and 7 off, or 20 days on and 10 off.  Just depends on the Company.   Most offer good benefits including insurance that will cover you very well for health, vision, and dental.

Some who begin to Cook on a Boat will take their off time to pursue an online Chef Certification and advance in income.  Generally these Barge and Towing companies will promote from within to grow and retain quality people.

This could not only make the Nomad Life more secure livelyhood, it may allow a Nomad who wants to work part time (say two weeks) at a Restaurant/Resort/State Park etc while off the water to advance their income well over $50K each year while allowing for 12 weeks of travel or camping.

ACBL (American Commercial Barge Lines) is presently looking for men and women.  There are jobs on land in ports as well as on the Boats.

Here is their page.  (and if you look for other Barge & Towing companies beware of "Headhunters" who will want a big cut of your wages if you hire thru them)   ;)  Go to the companies actual sites an hire in directly.

For anyone who has ever thought of working on the "blue water" in the Merchant Marine etc here is a page showing jobs they are seeking to fill. Some of these may require training and certification but that can be done and once on the job you can deduct that training from your income tax.

Remember,  there are many jobs including working on Ferry Boats on the Great Lakes,  Inspection boats, working in the port, business office,  beyond going to sea for some period of time. But this is good pay.  Those who serve on a boat that is out to sea for a period of time will have plenty of time off to Nomad and be able to afford a nice rig.

Today at noon on my local TV station they had an interview with the Plant Manager of General Mills Wellston, Ohio plant.   She is traveling thru Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky (and maybe further) looking for workers who wish to move there to work.

She stated that the General Mills plant she manages produces pizza, pepperoni rolls, and other such things.  That General Mills is a large employer and is trying to get staffed again and looking for employees.  Their pay scale is competitive. On the job training exist.

Wellston, Ohio is a few miles north east of Jackson, Ohio and south of Newark, Ohio.

The contact information if you are in any of these areas is:

Thanks for the great links, eDJ_!

I have also noticed a flood of job notices coming across my camper job feed. Companies like Aramark in Grand Teton WY, CLM Services and their partners in multiple locations, KOA in various locations, National Park contractors, and mom & pop campgrounds. Most seem to be looking to fill immediate openings for staff, till end of season in October. Also beet harvest will be starting and is filling their openings for all positions. These are the short term jobs but may get a promise for rehire next season if they like your work.

Winter season jobs are also out there, including parks with a winter season and off season maintenance positions.

Thanks for posting this information Crofter.  I appreciate your participation in this thread.  There will be a lot of jobs opening up with this Infrastructrure Bill and many of them could be well suited to the Nomads who don't see themselves as Digital Nomads.  This is the first time in a long long time those who wish to live this life style may be able to do it and thrive.

Now that many public schools are back in session the work at many parks and campgrounds is starting into layoff mode. The Grand Canyon National Park does not even have lines of vehicles at the entry gate and parking lots are pretty empty. It is still lovely summer weather but the tourist are getting sparse.

Any women here who would like to be a River Boat Cook but aren't sure they have enough experience?   One way to get that experience is to work in Agriculture as a crew cook for ranch hands.  This may provide room and board as well as a good paying job.  Some of these Agricultural jobs are seasonal so you can work and travel.  You may get to work with Chef's while on these jobs.  Then with some time at this type of work you could apply for work at a River Boat Company with that experience.

Check this Facebook page for more details and remember these may be Production Farms, Orchards, Dude Ranches, Government/Forestry jobs etc.

Rural And Remote Cooks

Great idea, thanks.  I understand jobs in Agriculture are plentiful and they are begging for workers in a wide variety of jobs.  If you think you could drive a Farm Tractor or a harvesting Columbine, do Maintenance,
General Labor or whatever I'm sure they will train on the job.  If you speak both English and Spanish (at least basic) you could get paid quite well.

As a follow on I looked into it and found this:

I am not a moderator, (thank God) and I’m not trying to be picky but isn’t this thread off kilter? I thought it was about online work not just work in general.

It was placed in the "Off Topic & Chit Chat" so it would have some wiggle room.

Notice so many newbies are explaining how they are trying to rake enough money together for a dependable rig and money to start up and  survive on ?  Many of the younger ones  have the Internet Skills that they've learned in school since the mid 80's.  These "off topic" job postings are fields one can work in part of the year and earn enough to get set up in a rig and when they are off duty they can work internet jobs from that rig. (with a full complement of computer equipment those jobs would afford them)

If they only have a car,  a job on a boat or in Agriculture may provide food and housing while on the job such that the earnings can go for a good dependable rig and start up money.  From there they can live in the rig and work as Digital Nomads during the time they are off work provided they wish to do that.   Some of the jobs listed provide fantastic insurance coverage year around also.

But to work online from one's rig,  they first must be able to own one equipped to work from.

So true, the startup cost of computer gear on top of the rig & basic build out. In hospitality, the gear is provided, except for remote camp host where only the software is provided.

Plus, must desire to do the screen time (when you could be outside in nature). Hosting is a mix of both in the smaller campgrounds.
