Business communication will be an essential part of the mobile office you work from.  Even though you may be using your Cell for an internet access point for your computer there are still some things you cannot do in 2020.  One of these is FAXing in the way you would use a stand alone FAX machine on a landline at home.  But there are work arounds for this depending on your employers or clients policies regarding security.

Other means of communication in the paperless realm will be Acrobat .PDF and FTP (file transfer protocol) with Zip/UnZip.

Sometimes we need to use paper as in the case with forms, documents, and digital signatures.
All of this is part of corresponding with coworkers, employers, government agencies, legal entities,
or whomever.

It may not be as difficult as it would seem.

Links to these resources will appear at the bottom after the details.

Starting with FAX documents.  If all you have is a Cell,  there are app's now that will allow you to use your Cell Phone, Tablet, Computer etc.   Some of these will allow you to set up an account and provide you with a number of "free" copies before a fee is charged.

Imagine a third party who will receive your FAX transmission via CELL (using their apps) and the third party relaying the FAX to it's destination as a FAX.

One leading service is Ring Central.  They are a most secure service with a high rating.  Cisco & AT&T
are co owners in this company.  You may be looking at $20 a month but if security and ease of use are important and you do a lot of FAXing in you work this may be worth looking into.

eFax is another good choice with a number of features Ring Central doesn't offer.  Both Ring Central and  eFax offer 14 day free trials.

Another third party that is all free once you set up an account is  FaxBetter.  All free, no credit card needed.  With this you are FAXing without a FAX line.

So for those occasions you may need to deal with "paper" these may be some solutions.  The fees
where present are a cost of business for those working as licensed businesses.  Otherwise for remote workers using the free service FaxBetter may be the better solution.

Another common skill employers and businesses seek in workers/contractors is being able to send and receive Acrobat documents. (or .PDF doc's)  Some will just go ahead and purchase a copy of Adobe Acrobat while others will use the open source freeware's like those that Mozilla publishes.

It is handy to have a means of creating your own "digital signature" to sign documents, or papers requiring your signature. (this is much better than using your mouse to sketch out your signature in MS Paint) A lot of people are still doing this. Unfortunately it doesn't instill confidence in your skills
with an employer.  Here is a free service so you can have a digital signature. "My Live Signature".

We still live in a world that occasionally needs paper documents and it leaves us using .PDF as a way of first going with paperless documents that can be printed.  Another advantage with .PDF is these files can be archived on a server and searched for quickly.  So .PDF will be around for the foreseeable
future.

When it comes to reading a .PDF both Firefox and Chrome browsers come with built in .PDF readers.
LibreOffice is a freeware based on Mozilla's Open Office. In it you can create your own .PDF documents that will be compatible with Microsoft .doc, .docx, .xls, .xlsx, .ppt, .pptx extensions.
LibreOffice Draw is good for editing your documents too.

Should you be stumped by a particular document extension "Pandoc" is a converter you should look
at.  It can convert a variety of extensions from one to another.  So should you stumped by a document that the .PDF software doesn't want to work with, this could be a handy work around to know about.  This is free.Pandoc Universal Document Convertorer Pandoc

FTP (file transfer protocol) has allowed for compressing large files into smaller ones for easier faster transmission.  CoffeeCup offers numerous freewares.  Their Free FTP 4.5 may be worth considering.
It works with Windows 8, 7, and Vista (if you are on older operating systems)   CoffeCup also offers their free Zip Wizard software.

In post #18 there is a link to test your internet connection speed.  If you want to work from home
there is a suggestion of download & upload speed.  But this may vary with what you wish to do.
Some task will not require as much with a minimum of 50 Mbps for the more basic and 100 Mbps
or more for more advanced.  10 Mbps as a minimum for uploading larger files.

More advanced task may include photo & video editing, audio editing, graphic design, and
video communication with multiple people.  (as in customer service)

This site offers 23 high paying jobs for Housewives working at home.  But these could be women
working from their rigs just as easily.  And Guys may find some of these interesting too.  (and support resources with links are offered for the job search in this too)

Question:

I have a hardwired data line here, and use my phine hotspot for unlimited data, which is slow here. Would it pay to get the data line put back in service, or no faster & cost effective than the phone hotspot?
-crofter

Crofter,  part of this will depend on the type of work you are wanting to do and the demands for high speed.  Once you can determine that then you can call your suppliers and inquire of what they can supply in Mbps and the cost of it.

I'm able to download from 54 Mbps to 36.29 Mbps and upload at 10.55 Mbps most of the time.  It floats as I'm on Cable Internet.  There is no limit on my data.  I work with copy writing, photo editing, some web  and graphic design daily.  And still the speed serves me fairly well.  With Cable it is the number of people on it that can pull down the speed.  With DSL (phone internet) the bottle neck is at the Central Office with the equipment installed which tends to be static & consistent.  That equipment is expensive and phone companies aren't eager to update it as they come under public utilities oversight what they can and cannot do.  My cable company is always sending me mail asking if I want to move up to faster speeds but I'm at $70 a month for what I'm getting now.  Once I sign up for the faster I don't think I can go back.

So you will be faced with doing some evaluation of what is available and shopping for the quality of service and prices offered for it.

I would ask if there is anything that could be done to boost your connection whether with their equipment or your own.

Check your connection speed with this link a few timed during the day and record it so you have an idea of what you have as a basis.  When you go shopping it may be handy to present it.

Click the center of the orange speedo where it says START, and give it a minute or two to test.
(the Ping Speed, or latency,  is how quickly your computer reacts once you click on something.  It is measured in "ms" or milliseconds and a fast (higher number) indicates how fast the reaction will be)

These measurements are the standard for measuring connection speed, for you or anyone else reading this.

Bandwidth Place

I’ve been having doctor appointments over the phone with video. Haven’t had a problem just using my ATT phone.

Cammalu,  when I was out recently I stopped in a fast food place with WIFI. (where the lobby is still open so you can dine in)  There is a large Hospital & Nursing School nearby.

I noticed a young lady dressed in a uniform like for a Dr. office.   She had a vinyl folder, was working with a tablet with keyboard, and was wearing a smart watch.  There were also a couple of jump drives beside her tablet.

I asked if she was remote working now and she indicated she was but had come in to the office of her employer this day.

I explained to her that I worked from home too and had been doing it for some time. She explain that she had also but did have to visit her work office periodically.  But what caught my eye was the simplicity of the equipment she was working with.  When I asked her about it she explained to me she had gotten it down to a near minimum of stuff to do her job.  But to do this she had learned to use all of the functions of each piece of equipment including the smart watch.

Her Tablet was a Lenovo Smart Tab M10 and the keyboard was an extra add on but she said less than $150 in everything excluding the Cell.  It blue toothed with her keyboard & wrist watch & cell.  The jump drives were for various work task she could load onto them at the office.  Said she could do her work offline and upload it back at the office as medical stuff isn't supposed to be done over WIFI.  Her working arrangement was good as it gave her a chance to go into the office a couple times a week and the flexibility to run errands, go grocery shopping, and get other personal stuff done. For her it is the best of all possible worlds.

Another bonus is packing everything up to fit into the vinyl folder. and it's extremely light weight.  She said she had a blue tooth printer at home but seldom did anything with paper anymore.  She uses "Office" software's & app's but didn't elaborate much on them. She didn't say if she video conferenced or not but I'm not even sure if the connection speed at a fast food WIFI place could support that.  Or if being medical related that it would be allowed.

One of the headaches I've had working from my home in the past is the constant phone ringing with "robo-calls", spam emails, and junk mail in my mail box.  (even unsolicited "junk Fax")  If you work or do business online you will eventually be burdened by all or some of these things.  Many of us know about the "National Do Not Call Registry" (and the followup verification once you've reported to it)   but there are other avenues available to go with that.

If you are going to work online you will need to be able to do so without distractions.  A quiet place.  Hang a sign on the door that says, "Please,  I'm at Work, Not Now",  for others who may seek entertainment by dropping by when you are working,  and the like.  I know a lot of people are starved for human contact now in this time of Covid,  but they have to understand you have work hours just the same as before Covid whether they are out of work or not.

As for Telemarketers,  they'll just have to call someone else.....like always.

There are some of us who would like to use dual or multiple monitors in our work.  (and even for our leisure entertainment)   There are many benefits in this for those working remotely and they will be described in the
last link.

It isn't that difficult to set these up but it will be different in Windows 10 than in 8/8.1, or 7.

The series of links to show how this is done follows starting for Windows 10, and on down to Windows 7.

These are Microsoft's directions for Windows 10,   Instructable's directions for 8 & 8.1, & a BW1 Youtube
Demo of how to use it.   Microsoft setting up dual monitors in Windows 7 and Youtube demo of how to use.

Be sure to read Netstar's discussion of the benefits of multiple monitors at the bottom.

I currently know three people working 100% remote jobs that they got since the COVID crisis started. They like the jobs a lot more than they thought they would (2 are in customer relations and 1 is in IT support), but they absolutely must be available during the exact hours the company asks them to be at their workstations, and they have frequent virtual meetings. So they would not be able to do these jobs without a fairly predictable schedule and 100% reliable internet and cellular connection.

While I was on the road, I had a Verizon jetpack with “unlimited” data, which provided blistering fast internet for the first 20 GB, and then they ramped you way down to almost unusable speeds in the hopes that you would purchase an upgrade or an extra data pack. I had an antenna, too, so I could get decent data beyond normal cell phone range. But if I had been working and needing to check in via an internet connection every day, or have Zoom calls every day, my path would have been radically different, as I would have had to focus on always being somewhere with solid internet, as well as being available during certain hours every day. Of course, I have no idea if all remote jobs are like that. I imagine they aren’t. My favorite places on the road were places without any data or cellular service of any kind, anyway, but they wouldn’t be good places for remote work.

I am actually very curious to know now how the COVID crisis has affected the supply and demand of the types of remote jobs that existed before 2020. Have the jobs gotten harder to get, as more people have been out of work and are looking to work remotely?

I think this Covid epidemic has caught a lot of remote workers, Digital Nomads, and traveling workers, not to mention internet broadband providers off guard.  The suppliers need to catch up fast as the demand is growing
and will do so thru the end of 2021 according to reports on Tech Sites and Television News.  One of the biggest
issues is with Data allotment in the plans.

At my home, which is fiber optic,  I can get 1 Gig up & down with unlimited data for $110 a month.  But I doubt
I could get a hot spot with that speed & data for the same price.

Just this morning NBC News "Today Show" reported women are leaving the workforce seven times more than men.  Many would like to work from home provided they have the internet connection that would enable them to do so.

Here is some discussion on Verizon's offerings and an Internet Plans Comparison chart State by State from WhistleOut.

Also,  a discussion of using multiple monitors or one BIG monitor that is partitioned to serve as multiple monitors from ViewSonic.

(my main concern for remote workers working from their rig is what if the one BIG monitor craps out ?  Then what ?  Monitors are plentiful and inexpensive enough used that any budget conscious Nomad could acquire an extra monitor and have redundancy if one failed)

As for job availability, Covid is putting limits on businesses needing to employ skilled, talented, and willing to work people. More so now than before 2020. The bottleneck
will be with broadband connections (whatever they may be) that will enable workers to be "ready, willing, and able" to work.

This morning 1/4/2021 AgDay (a National Agricultural Report on TV/Web) announced a new push for Rural
Boradband across the USA.  The FCC, The Dept of Agriculture, and other advocating agencies USDA are
pushing for this to happen now.  Citing the broadband gap as a critical issue made even more urgent by he Covid pandemic Agriculture needing it, WFH people in the rural areas needing it, school kids needing it,  and so on and industry needing the work/jobs for installing it.

This may make it more available for Nomads living in BLM areas and those west of the Mississippi River.
Since there are those in medical science suggesting that this Covid pandemic may extend into 2023 others
involved in broadband such as Telehealth providers are saying this can't come soon enough.

So Broadband expansion in rural areas may be coming this year.

Watch the half hour AgDay Report for 1/4/2021 here:

A little different than working from your rig all year but this is also an educational opportunity.

American Commercial Barge Line is hiring according to an email a friend just sent me.  Some River Boat people own RV's and live out of them during the 6 months of the year that they are off.  The other 6 months they live on the water aboard the Tow Boat and have room and board built in to the job.

Understand, this can be hard work with danger.  But with two years of experience on the deck you can apply to move up to a Pilot in training and from there to Pilot and on to Captain.  (which can pay 150k a year....for 6 months of work)  These jobs generally provide 100% health, dental, and visual insurance.

If you do not have a felony offense so you can get a TWIX card (homeland security)  you may be able to be hired and trained.  These jobs can pay $55k and up to 70k annually.  Then you have a month between shifts to go travel.  Even work remotely from your rig if you want to make some side money. You also need a high school degree or GED, and a valid drivers license.

You could retire student loans, recover from divorce, have the rig of your dreams, snow bird between northern, midland, and southern locations,  and live large while you are still young enough to enjoy it.

If you are a woman or man who excels at cooking, Canal Barge Company is looking for cooks now.
You will be on a Boat for a month and off a month.  There may be other schedules available too.  Boat cook jobs may vary from around 30K and up especially if you have a Chef's certification. (Chef education/certification online is becoming more common and inexpensive now).  Those who would do this may be able to travel in their RV and work remotely, or if they wish to work camp they could serve as a Chef in the National/State Park restaurant facilities. (where they are in operation in this time of Covid)

For any of those nomads who live around the coast, Great Lakes, or Gulf of Mexico there are Maritime Jobs with various schedules.  So many types of jobs. You could go out on the deep blue for several months and have plenty of money to travel for several months while back on the land.  There are jobs on Tug Boats that service ships or oil rigs and they may offer interesting schedules. Yacht cruises need staff too.   It 's just a matter of knowing where to look for these jobs in order to get a start.

But again,  if working remotely in one place with a computer isn't your thing these maritime jobs offer good pay and plenty of time off to Nomad in your rig.

On the job training is not uncommon in this industry.

Other than directors and Naval engineers,
there are lots of jobs for deckhands, cooks etc, in the tugboats going up and down on Mississippi.
Just Google
tugboat deckhands jobs
They are listed with the regular employment companies, like Indeed, Glassdoor, Simplyhired, etc.

Quite right and thank you Sofishintown.

I know the thread is about gaining education & skills for working remotely  online but that may not be for everybody.  Most people who have grown up in inland areas where there is no maritime industry may not
realize that there is so much employment on the water just as on the land.

A huge amount of the supply chain in the USA is transported by water.

Some of these maritime jobs may even lend themselves to remote working too.  So often you read advice
not to try to work on days you travel when working on the road.  These maritime jobs tend to have generous schedules allowing substantial "off time".  Here a Nomad could work aboard a boat or ship and make a good living and use the "off time" to just travel or do some remote working if they choose.
