Wild E. I keep going back to look at David Ellis range tent http://www.cowboycamp.net/range_tents.php . It has two poles and the video shows some one putting it up. There is an 8X8 and a 10X10 and he makes it look easy on the video. It's a lot of bucks but it's canvas and suppose to be able to take the wind and weather. That would be good for a set up for the 14 day thing or BLM camping.

There will be times I do an over night stay that a cheap pop up would do. I will be driving from the east coast so I think I will need frequent rest stops for me and Luci (if she gets to come with me). I want to enjoy the drive and scenery and have mental clear out time. If the range tent is as easy as it looks I could set up and rest for 2 days then get back on the road again. I found a couple other tents I keep bouncing back and forth on.

I looked at the Cabela xwt tent

http://www.cabelas.com/product/Camp...25345&WTz_l=SBC;BRprd1325345;cat105517980

but it looks like it is difficult to set up. It's shown in snow and is suppose to be pretty good but it is poly some thing or other and for the money it cost it may not last very long. Arrrrg....

I'm not sure where every one is finding the canvas tent deals. I tried to go on Craigs list but I don't think I was on the right link.

I'm still searching, reading, and studying. I hope the links I put in are workable.

I camped for years (literally) in a compression-arch A-frame tent like the Eureka timberline series. Mine was made by Diamond, but they no longer make them. These http://store.eurekatent.com/timberline-4-tent are awesome tents, and self-supporting. The nice thing about this type of tent is that you can break a pole and it doesn't bugger-up the works. ..Willy.

My little red. G3 Pontiac is litttttttle. I went to the site to read about towing some thing. If I am reading correctly it wouldn't pull a little red wagon without tearing up the transmission and other stuff that was so far over my mechanical head I can't do memory retrieval to mention them. Drats.

Willy. Thanks for the info. I was on the Eureka site and couldn't figure out what I was looking for. Soooooo many tents I got confused. I brought up your link and clicked on the timberline tents. So I am going to study on them for a while. Mr Bob did advise me to go to at least a 4 man tent. I think he is right on that. With just me and possibly Luci it would be more comfortable changing or being cooped up during a long rain storm.

Yay. My sleeping bag arrived today. Wow big enough for me and Luci to snuggle down in. If the nights are chilly she will more than likely climb under and poke her head out the top. lol

The timberland is polyester taffeta. Would that hold up? I looked at the poles and the set up seems like some thing I could manage. The prices are definitely better. lol

I mostly use kijiji.ca - .ca is for Canada

when doing a search try the following key words;
wall tent
canvas tent
military tent
prospectors tent
pioneer tent
bell tent

good luck

With a roof top carrier or a small utility trailer, yes you will expend more fuel, though you can have your whole camping rig inside either of them. A small utility trailer can be pulled by a motorcycle, so a car is more! That is what I would do, note I said I would do, you make up your own mind. Don't sweat it right now, just get an EL Cheapo tent or one that you already have. In two to three months then get another, you have time to look lots. Remember, get a big tarp, tarp the whole campsite let alone the tent. That way you have lots of dry area, tent, table, stretching out room, all dry. Watch for deals along the way, tell people you want a tent, check out all the surplus stores, the online ads, the book ads?? not sure what you call them anymore, but they have them in the states as well.

you can try

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kijiji
http://www.ebayclassifieds.com/
http://kijiji-usa-free-classifieds.starshine1.aidpage.com/
http://www.classifiedads.com/categories.php

It's durable enough for what you intend. Truth is, you'll probably end up rethinking how you want to do things after a few months on the road, so why overthink stuff? ..Willy.

Why not look at roof top apartments..
https://www.google.ca/search?q=car+...mp;ei=0BSPUenVConHqQHqt4HYBQ&ved=0CEYQsAQ

Roof Top Tents

Willy. You are probably right. I am over thinking stuff. I am trying so hard to be logical and not dumb. I have that blinking sucker sign on my forehead so I am trying to educate myself and do it right the first time.

Wild E. OMGOODNESS thank you for all the search sites. WOW. I thought you were kidding me on the apartment tents. OMGOODNESS I saw some small cars with the tents. I have never seen anything like it before. I saw a trailer too. Is that what you were talking about as the motor cycle trailer? That would be sooooo awesome.

A little more space is worth the decrease in mileage. I remember getting 31mpg and I think 36mpg. It's been a while since I did the calc. Right now... please don't laugh.... a tank of gas lasts me 3 months. Too the store... to the pharmacy... and home. The only reason I have 11,000+ miles is the travel to Baltimore to my doc. Now that is down to once every 6 months.

I have bookmarked all the sites and will do detailed searches on them.

Bless your heart thank you for the links.

Kidiekat, I'm kinda/sorta thinking the same way you are.....unsure if ya want to commit TOTALLY to the nomadic lifestyle and wanting to "test the waters" by possibly tent-camping initially. This would also allow me to see other folks set-ups so as to determine what I might eventually buy for myself. I'm probably going to get the Kodiak but here's a REAL INEXPENSIVE way to get started (again...it's been Burning Man (i.e. HIGH WINDS) tested). LINK : http://maxicon.com/Burning_Man/PVC_Structures/pvc_on_the_playa.htm
Another reason I'm testing the waters is that I'm thinking I might roam around enough to find a 1-5 acre piece of land that I could afford and that has water. I wouldn't even worry about a cabin/home initially...just a place I could stay at with no 14 day limit (and a spot with decent weather). I just know it has to exist SOMEWHERE !!! Maybe bordering BLM or Forest lands.
KinA

ken your link is not working. btw what are you doing in anaheim I am in placentia. highdesertranger

Last fall I bought a 8x10 dome tent at a yard sell for all of $5.00. Had never been out of the case. Never can tell what one can find if persistent.

I have read that the canvas tent is suppose to be the best for weather. I found this canvas pop up tent. Toss in the air and it opens itself. It's a 3 man tent from Australia. It sure seems like it would be a good start out tent.
Is any one familiar with it?

I keep looking. I will find some thing that I can pitch and will protect me from the weather. I will definitely get tarps for extra protection.

try thinking TARP-TENT-VEHICLE combinations. This article will get you thinking about how to deploy TARP technology in a different way. Combine that with a vehicle for steel-glass shelter, and a cheap tent, and you can do some interesting combinations.

http://www.trailspace.com/forums/beginners/topics/120382.html

Or just buy the $800 four season tent and be done with the thinking.

Okay I want to thank everyone for all the input. I found a tent that I ordered. The price was just so outstanding. I had to try it. It will be good to start out in.

It is good for the desert wind and sand or snow in the mountains. It has one pole and has the tie points for securing in high wind. Bath tub bottom and sealed seams. Sleeps 4. 8X8X6.5 so enough room for me and Luci. HEy I can stand up in it. I think....

Since I am disabled and slower it also looks like some thing I can handle setting up.
I am posting the picture. Hope it comes through.

http://www.redcanyongear.com/products/pingora-tent
