All you have to do is drive about 1/2 mile until you see the big cactus, turn right, go across 3 washes, turn left go past the 4th rock, turn right again, go around the big circle, continue until you see the little gnome.

its that easy LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

Haha. That’s about it freelander. They can either stay in YARC camp with us “Ain’t right”people or move on.

Van theft update - van was released from car jail yesterday ($600) and towed to a mechanic. Thieves sawed off the ignition, but otherwise van was untouched, as far as we can tell. Replacing the lock cylinder will run about $200. No broken windows - how did they get in? Dunno. I am told a slim jim can work on a door. I should be able to pick it up sometime this morning.

What they took - my generator, my folding solar panels, my propane tank, my refrigerator, my bedding, my favorite sewing machine, my yarn, my zero gravity chair, the CLAM, the house battery (cheap chinese LiFePo4), the portable RockPals batteries, my Omnia Oven, most of my clothes, my jewelry, my food, my weed, my stash of wipes, and various other stuff. Most of my clothes includes most of my plain cotton underwear - WHY???? OTOH, they left all my pots and pans, my brand new InstantPot, my machete, and all the books I had with me - I'd guess they're not readers, but they did take my "So Many Books, So Little Time" sweatshirt, so who knows.

I went right out and bought a sleeping bag, and will be ready to go as soon as the van is ready. Heading back up to Santa Cruz for a week or two, my friend's house is a good place to receive mail and packages, no infernal Q post office to cope with. Also, just because.

Not sure exactly when I'll arrive in Q, but definitely some time before the RTR.

It could have been SO much worse - I could be trying to buy a van right about now!

I’m so sorry to hear about your van theft and the loss of so many of your possessions, but you’re absolutely right in that it could have been much worse.

Things can be replaced, and even your van could be replaced, but fortunately you still have that.

A book I read recently had a line in it that I loved…”When all else fails, be a cautionary tale”, from The Last Train to Key Wesr by Chanel Cleeton.

All the best to you as you rebuild and go on.

I’ve always thought that my 1998 dodge with his rust spots all over was a deterrent to theft. Maybe I need to think differently. I really hope things work out for you today.

NatureLover, I'm told that thieves prefer older vehicles, they're much easier to break into. If the thieves are not looking to steal cars, but rather looking to steal what's IN the vehicle, they won't much care what the vehicle looks like.

Before replacing the stuff I lost, I'm going to be looking into after-market measures that will make the van harder to break into. Cameras are fine, and I will probably get one, but I'm thinking a camera is best for chasing them down after the fact. I'm more interested in causing them to pass up my van in the first place.

BTW, none of my stuff was brand new nor was it fancy when it was new - my Nikon, for instance, was over 10 years old, you could probably buy it used for $50 in a legitimate second-hand store. They won't get much at all for it, yet they took it. (Just checked on eBay - bidding is at a whole $11.50.)

Ah crap. At least you got the van back. Sorry you had to go through all this BS.

I have a friend going to Santan solar in the next couple weeks. They have panels for $50. Want one?

^The thieves left the $80 SanTan panel attached to the roof as well as the Epever CC inside..........................

When are YOU leaving Kentucky ?????

Sure glad you got the van back... I can tell you (or anyone) what to do to keep most guys from starting your van or any electronic ignition vehicle... if you wish. They would have to work real hard to get it started, and most will give up first.

On second thought, I will send it out by PM only.

Vanlife popularity awareness by thieves. Great.

Where did you have the generator stored?

Jacqueg - I'm so happy to hear you got your van back, but sorry they took so much from you and you have big bills to pay as well, for their crime. I would think that when recovering a stolen vehicle the impound lot would drop the charges, but I guess not.

I just heard from RVGuy - he switched phone numbers. He's still willing to do the work! I'm so happy to hear that. He got the solar panels for the roof. Yay... now I just need to get my tire repaired so I can drive to Yreka. The tire keeps losing pressure so I don't want to drive it on the river highway until that's fixed.

Oh boy TA... I’m working on Jim in Denver with solar panels... I better bug him for the info I need to order stuff. Dang... haha. Happy your seeing progress and your guy is still on it.

And jacqueg... wow, it could have been worse. Sorry about your underwear. Haha. No, but your generator and all that. I hope you don’t get to many surprises getting it going. Still stinks! We’ll have to remember when you get to Q that if we walk within a half mile of your rig we’ll be setting off alarms, cameras and your big guard dogs.

Van is now back in my possession, and I'm very glad to have it. It is running fine, the mechanic noted some things that need taking care of, but they are just ordinary maintenance, nothing to do with the break-in.

Generator was inside the van. My food and some other miscellaneous stuff was stored outside in the cargo carrier.

I found out how they got in - they drilled out the passenger door lock, so it is now permanently open.

I'm spending another night at a motel, I NEVER want to drive in LA/Orange County again on Friday evening. It is just purely awful - three hours to go 60 miles. But I did buy a sleeping bag, and am thinking seriously of sleeping in the van tonight, maybe going out around midnight or so when check-in traffic has died down. I am now so paranoid about parking my van at a motel! Funny how our minds work. I have spent many dozens of nights in motels over the years, with nary a problem.

I did buy a Club today, so that is now on the van. I'm also going to have an engine kill switch installed. And, since I have to have the passenger door lock replaced anyway, thinking about after-market keyless entry locks for all the doors.

Yes, it really could have been worse. Thanks to the incredible generosity of my family and friends, all will be well financially. It's only stuff. I keep telling myself that, and I believe it about half the time!

Jacqueg - Your good news made my day. These things rarely work out that good and I’m glad yours is not as bad as it could’ve been. All your security steps sound wise. I have seen many vans to come to market in Lancaster County. The vendors are from Philadelphia area and they have heavy duty hasps with extra heavy big padlocks. Bolted to the doors. I wonder what neighborhoods they are coming from in Philly

Congratulations I’m glad to see things are working for you.

Jacqueg:  I am so glad you and your van have been reunited, and I am very sorry for the trauma and loss you've experienced.  (Sewing machine and Omnia:  ouch!)  I didn't want to say, but since you did--yep.  That's how they do it.  No drill required.  Years ago I saw a gizmo on-line that fortifies the cylinder.  I'll see if I can find it.

Your discomfort about staying in a motel now is certainly valid.  We had a breakdown and motel stay recently.  The van was ready earlier than expected, but I opted to leave it at the shop overnight because I thought it might be less of a target there (which isn't saying much).  There was a time when I wouldn't have given it a thought.  After all, who would want my tennis shoes, right?  #VanLife has, I think, created a new awareness among thieves.

Best wishes for happy onward travels!

Jacqueg, I’m so glad you got the van back. All the stuff they took—man, that sucks. I’ve been stolen from once, and the things they took and what they left seemed to add insult to injury. I’m just extra irked on your behalf that they took your yarn, your undies, and your Omnia oven. The rest may have been criminal, but that’s just plain rude. Hope you get everything back in order soon.

I wonder why they picked a Friday night to do the update?

Let's hope all those drunk club goers won't have problems getting an Uber... :s
