I have been an admin of a few dating sites. One international with people from over 200 countries. Setting up one is time consuming but not difficult.

Monitoring such sites, removing Scammers and spammers and keeping discussions civil can become a full time effort....

This actually was a thought I had previously. I have a server that can handle it except if a video chat is attached as they are very resource hungry...

There are software options that could be live in a matter of a few weeks... Coding a site from scratch unless you are planning a commercial ads etc site, is really not necessary.

So... What exactly do people want
Open membership (no verification)?
Totally Free?
Maybe a few dollars a month to cover expenses?
Video Chat?

Let's see what people say

I'm still confused. Can someone advocating for a 'dating site' explain why the 'Romance for Solo Travelers' and 'Dating Resumes' sub-forums (of Matters of the Heart) are not the same thing?
Because forums are rarely private or discreet... On a Dating site you do not have to publicly post and you can post lots more information, photos etc.

I think people see posting on a forum, basically advertising yourself can seem a bit desperate.. 8

I looked at the Forum's version of a dating site and came away not quite impressed. And I certainly understand why many people are hesitant to put out personal details.

Often I read something here that really impresses or educates me and I think of reaching out to start a one-on-one conversation. But I don't want to intrude. Our forum lacks the visual indicators of availability or interest person-to-person contact provides. I would like to see an (optional) icon system added to our names like:
  • Back Off
  • Open to conversation
  • Hook me up
  • Committed
  • Private inquiry welcomed
  • etc.

Anyone can start a new thread. The O.P can start one and call it anything they like.

If you do not publicly post on a dating site, how do you present yourself? My name is John Doe and all my info is private?

IMO a site for "friendships" rather than "please like me" dating sites, would make a lot of sense. No selling yourself, just responding to like-minded individuals for mutual companionship. If something more develops; "Bob's Your Uncle."

Your personal profile is your advertisement....
By having a site directed at a particular group you already know that you at least have something in common...

Like maybe you own a brand new 2022 Mercedes Van Pop Top lol and a 5k month trust check... There is a selling point 😊

From my experience... Attracting attention comes down to quality of photos and a well written "about me"

You know I have friends living all over the planet that met on the one Dating site I ran, hundreds of us are still friends....

But far more disappointment and thieves and liars are to be found... I always thought as I chased idiots trading child porn or Scammers deceiving people. What a great thing the internet is but at the same time gave access to some really horrible people

Zoidberg is looking better and better ISN'T he ladies? Hmmmmmmm?

Agreed. Better to keep things very simple. Frienship is the foundation of everything. It can get very awkward if someone approaches another someone with their hopes on their sleeve and it is not reciprocated. We have all been on both sides of that equation. Best to avoid such stress. Even the singles circle at the RTR a few years ago was filled with over-eager glances and avoidant gazes.

Exactly. Forums and Facebook groups are too public. Nobody wants to seem desperate. I've even gotten to the point where I won't say hi to cute guys when they post intro posts because they get inundated with comments and it seems too much like "Pick me " I do not have a "pick me" mentality.

On a dating site, no one can see who responds to who - so no one can see who you like or who's ignoring who - and you can keep some information private until you match.

Attractive women get hit on in person all the time. Dating sites are more about matching up mutual interest. Of course if you are out on the road full time you

You are completely anonymous here, unless you posted your real name. Who would really care anyway. You meet someone start doing a PM with them.

I would never randomly message a stranger unless I knew how they looked and that they were interested in dating. And people do notice and think negatively about people who come across as desperate.
