One needs to define what the firearm will be doing for security, what is legal and IF you can use it that way and are you able to use it. I can not see using any long rifle for security purposes and getting away with it legally. My definition is a hand bun.

The HR's at Cabelas are only $200. Just long enough to be allowed through Canada.

I'll bite. What's a hand bun?? Does it come toasted?

What kind of firearm should I carry to protect myself?
There are three primary types of gun, each has it's own strengths an weaknesses. Which one you choose to purchase and carry depends on what you are trying to accomplish...

[Edit - I moved this answer to original post, above]

I carry four guns.

870 Super Mag 12 ga. for all my hunting needs.
.22 Ruger single 6 for trap line dispatch.
.22 Henry Survivor. For a small long rifle.
A model 700 30-06. for big game hunting.

With the 870 12 gauge with the right load you could drop me out of a plane anywhere in the world and I would a) feel safe and b) be fed well.

First time a cop sees you carrying that in the city or grocery store you will have a different opinion. What do you do for Concealed Carry?

James, I worked with the carpenters local out of Philly and New York City. I left there after 22 years of service and left nothing there. I have no reason to go back. If you have a hunting license and know where you can go. I do not drive through NY or NJ state on the way to NH or ME with the pistol. I leave it behind. I my region if you know the laws, you are fine.

Plus other than the pistol they are long guns, without clips. SO even under the present gun grabs they are way under the law. I have an amendment its the 2nd.

I do not carry in store, etc. I have a knife which IMO is better than the gun in a close quarter type thing any how. Like clock work, every morning whether I wear shorts or jeans, I wear a belt. On it goes a SOG multi tool (same one the SEALS use) belt goes through the loop so to lock the SOG in place, then goes a (2) AA mag lite in a sheath. After that a Gerber Lock blade.

I use each and every one of these on a daily basis. The knife is sharpened every night when I have my wind down beer at the campground. Also, muscle memory is a great thing. I can under a crawlspace, reach around grab the SOG, open it like a butterfly knife in a Bruce Lee movie and have it ready. The light comes in handy for everything, dark corners of bins etc.

I grew up on a farm 25 miles from Camden, NJ the murder capital of the country for 10 straight years, until New Orleans took that away. LOL I worked as a pile driver and carpenter in some very bad and with very bad people. I can honestly say I am not afraid of anything. With or without a gun. But, it is a tool like a hammer and I use them for what they were intended and for what I need them for.

By the way, my best friend is head of the Harrisburg SWAT team and he keeps me straight with the legals.

Rilfes and shot guns are less restricted to carry around then handguns are. I do not know of any state that requires a permit to carry a rifle/shotgun... and the reason why is because it is so impractical to do so that no one does it. You CAN do it legally, you just wont want too. Of course, double check your state laws as there may be specifics.

What do I have/carry?
1) Full size Smith & Wesson M&P 40 handgun, with conceal carry permit, and 3 magazines (15 rds each) for "personal protection" (on me 7 days a week, 24 hrs a day, every where I go without exception). I also carry a high-powered LED tactical flashlight and a knife.
2) 12 gauge shotgun with 26" hunting barrel for skeet shooting and 18" barrel for "home/van protection" (always loaded with buck-shot, but not chambered to follow laws in vehicle)
3) .22 semi-auto rifle for varmint hunting and plinking (I bought this for my son when he was 12 years old to teach him responsible and safe gun handling, he is now 15)
4) 30-30 lever action rifle (what you see in the old western movies) for medium game hunting out to 300 meters.

I plan to buy two more guns later this year
1) Smith and Wesson Shield handgun (smaller, easier to conceal during summer months)
2) 30-06 or 308 bolt action rifle for large game and longer range hunting capabilities

I have little use for any 'assault style' rifle personally, but I do understand and respect their value. If I find a good deal, I'd pick one up, but it's not a big deal too me (my buddies have them if I need them for the zombie apocalypse)

@VT good bunch of iron. I have a conceal carry for the state I am in, but cross over the state line to much to carry. Next state your toast. Anyhow, I have 42 guns in about $2000 worth of safes at a good friends house. All legally stored or he would have to arrest himself. LOL..

When I need a gun for a specific reason, I make it a point to plan my adventure with a stop there or as like last year he shipped it to me from PA to WY. I was trapping coyotes in WY and wanted my .220 swift for varmint calling on a few ranches.

Like I said, my ruger is for trapped animal dispatch. I do not carry it outside the law. Even in NY I can carry it on the trap line legally. Piss on Cuomo and Bloomberg. However, don't thing I would drive from here to Maine with it and go through NY with it. Crazy laws.

@VT 300 yards with a 30-30? Yea, it will kill what it hits, but it will drop 3' in that distance. lol I just a few weeks ago gave a guy my grandfathers 30-30 Lee in the field reloading kit. He used to take it to Maine and PA for deer season and he took five loaded rounds, a small pinch of powder and five more bullets . He said and showed me how fast he could reload a bullet in the field with the little kit. Also, he said he never had to make a bullet in the field. LOL But he could. The kit is about the size of two packs of cigarettes. Simple yet effective.

And there you have it folks. Safety On The Road in a nutshell...

Per my understanding, yes. You cannot carry in AZ unless you have a state Dl or a Concealed permit. In AK no. Please check on this.

James, I believe it was a simple typo on your part...

You say, "You cannot carry in AZ unless..." when I believe you meant to say, "You cannot CONCEAL carry in AZ unless..."
The only reason I bring it up is to make sure the correct info is given. You *can open-carry* in AZ without any form of permit, even as a non-resident.

Minimotos95 - http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/ will get you the info you need.

Don't EVER get into a factual argument with Van-Tramp! Just joking!
