Hi, not sure this is the right place for this.

Thought I'd share something that scared the hell outta me. Apparently this law has already passed. In efforts to combat drunk driving congress passed this to monitor us within our vehicle. Including video within the vehicle!

Has anyone heard about this? How much do you think this will impact our way of life?

This doesn't sit well with me at all.

I apologize if this is too political and needs to be taken down.

They've had breathalizers that people caught driving drunk had to blow into for 20+ years. I think those in vehicles are a good idea as my sister was killed by a drunk driver. I hope it detects pot smoking also as Michigan is a pot legal state.

Yeah I'm all for the safety aspect of this. I just don't like the spying aspect. Having the intoxicant sensors is cool but the rest of it I'm honestly afraid of.

The guy in the you tube had no idea what was going to be done. I'll wait for the facts.
Also I can't find any other news specifically about video being taken so idk where this guy got that info.

If they do take video though how will folks maintain their insurance? Folks are going to get canceled for actually living in their vehicles.

It is also to be considered that few if any of us could buy a new 2026 vehicle, and as such it will be 10-20 years before any of us are affected by buying a used vehicle.. and in 20 years I'll be pushing 84... if I am here at all... why worry about something that is decades off...

There are too many people trying to tell "their truth" to the masses. It's been happening for decades, but now we have the Internet and social media.

And there are those who will look at that and assume they you posted it because you verified the content, and believe without verifying it themselves. Then the circle continues.

Be proactive. Follow up. Research. Don't be the one that said Jim Jones was super smart and you should believe him. There's always more than enough Kool-Aid to go around. Pick your flavor.

Just for the record, I've known about this for some time. The only thing that the guy has glommed into was the "Other purposes" wording. So basically, the car can detect if your drunk yes. It can also tell if you're driving in an impaired fashion (i.e. drunk, high, sleepy, having a seizure, whatever). Most of the higher tech cars have some sort of driver attention tech. The ones that have driver assist features do. And the information is available for you to read.

This guy says it doesn't sit well with him. Then maybe he should ditch all his tech. Because it's much easier to track someone, surveill them, and keep track of them in other ways than their car. In fact, most cars are Internet equipped standard, as well as GPS. Whether it's for remote updates, Internet access, directions, or being able to control your car via an app on your phone. I personally don't care for all the extra tech, having been in the tech field for decades.

But it's been here, and that guy is using it to get clicks so he can make money. And get people to follow him online. And many other things. That's the new techy wild west, and he thinks he's found gold.

I have mixed emotions about it. If a drunk driver kills/hurts someone, it wasn't a matter of him minding his own business. Now he has entered the social realm with his destruction. Society has to do something.
If he repeatedly drives drunk, he does pose a threat and should be taken off the road. The "reporting" part would have some value here.
But a video camera in the car? There's no need for that. The car can tell if you're drunk without that.

I'm guessing the system will turn off once the ignition is turned off. Otherwise they're going to have an awful lot of bored people sitting in front of tv monitors, watching nobody doing nothing.
Like Gr8ful says, I'll wait for the facts.
Meanwhile, I'll take a hammer to any camera in my van.

And what's to prevent you from covering up the camera lens?

The author George Orwell would not have been surprised to see that if he was still living 🙃

I agree. But I've continued to read about this and I still can't find any other news mentioning video in the car except for what this guy says. So perhaps there's nothing to really worry about.

I still think the drunk sensors are neat. But when he started talking about video in the car I freaked out.

Also I would like to apologize for the long video. I'm at a house atm and forget about internet speeds on the road.

It would be nice if the system could shut down the ******* hotrodders who terrorize the neighborhoods with their speed and exhaust volume. But that would probably have to involve the "reporting" aspect.

@Happy Camper Pretty neat. Thanks. I tried to post a story that mentioned using infrared cameras to determine driver attentiveness but it's not posting for some reason.

@fairman136 Now that I wouldn't mind being reported. If their insurance went up due to their driving behaviors maybe they'd slow down a bit.

Not sure how this will go over where it's legal to drink and have open alcohol containers while in a moving vehicle so long as you are not the one driving. The last time I was there you could get hurricanes in Louisiana in a big Styrofoam cup with a straw at the drive-through...

There are a lot of good resources out there for how to figure out whether you can trust something you see online.

Some things to consider: what makes the author an expert on this topic? is he an automotive industry leader? a professor of engineering? Edward Snowden uploading files he hacked from the DOT? some stoner in his mother's basement?
... Are you seeing the same story reported elsewhere? (if it's a big deal and it's true, chances are 0 that only one person will know about it)
... What is the website's claim to credibility? Is the story posted on the Wall Street Journal site, or LetsMessWithNomadsHeads.com?
... If the story refers to a law that's on the books, you can check the law yourself.

I bet if you walked into your local library and told the librarian you wanted to learn how to fact-check online "news," they'd be thrilled to show you some resources. If you happen to get a crabby or ignorant librarian (highly unlikely!), then try again at a different library, maybe a bigger one. Lots of libraries also post advice about this online.

Remember, getting people to "freak out" is how these platforms make money. Being a careful information shopper is one part of your life that you DO control.

Mods might want to delete this thread. Or not. Advertising clickbait seems silly. I saw this video previously and ignored it, expecting that reputable (multiple) news sources would cover it if there was an actual story.
