Another "extra" of walking poles is if you carry some line and a hook in your first aid kit (you do carry a first aid kit , right?) a pole will make a nice fishing rod !

I got mine after borrowing a pair on a hike in death valley around ubehebe crater.

I have used a walking staff my whole life.  just one though,  I don't really understand the 2 thingy.  mine is homemade.  I  use mine for snake protection mostly but it does come in handy for water crossings.  highdesertranger

I was of the same mind as you then I tried two ski poles on a mountain climb now I have a set of colapseble trekking poles would not walk any distance without them, much better balance but mostly like others have mentioned it is a complete body workout and less stain on your knees especially going down hill.

I used my cane today to walk on a sand road, it was much better than nothing but I'm betting two sticks is gonna rock!

Trekking pole update: These things are great!!! I've done two half mile loops on the boardwalk (a beach dune walkover made of wood, it runs about 1.5 miles total), and today did a mile roundtrip on the beach at sunrise.

Congratulations on your newfound freedom!!

Isn't it amazing what a pair of sticks in your hands will do to your legs and back? :D
