I left Kingman yesterday to escape the coming heat. I was thinking about heading northwest but instead climbed the hills up to Williams. The weather is really nice. Getting a decent amount of solar in my site on a partly cloudy day.

They graded the road to Dogtown Lake and added stones to the gravel. Last year it was pretty bad. Muddy with deep ruts in places. Compared to last year, it's a ghost town. There was a lockdown due to the virus and I guess everyone headed out to the forest.

It's 68 degrees in the van at 11:30 AM. Can't beat that

Oh, the Places You'll Go!

by

Dr. Seuss

Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.

You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.

And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you'll head straight out of town.

It's opener there
in the wide open air.

Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.

And then things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.

OH!
THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!

You'll be on y our way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.

You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.

Except when you don't.
Because, sometimes, you won't.

I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
that Bang-ups
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.

You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.

You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.

And when you're in a Slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.

You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked.
A place you could sprain both your elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?

And IF you go in, should you turn left or right...
or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite?
Or go around back and sneak in from behind?
Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find,
for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.

You can get so confused
that you'll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles cross weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place...

...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or the waiting around for a Yes or No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.

Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for the wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a string of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.

NO!
That's not for you!

Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.

With banner flip-flapping,
once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!

Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. There are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be as famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.

Except when they don't
Because, sometimes they won't.

I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you.

All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.

And when you're alone, there's a very good chance
you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.

But on you will go
though the weather be foul.
On you will go
though your enemies prowl.
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl.
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.

On and on you will hike,
And I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.

You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never foget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.

And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)

KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!

So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
You're off the Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!

When I departed Kingman, I went to visit friends in Henderson NV. I hadn't seen them in over 20 years! They persuaded me to stay the night. They even took me out to dinner. Had a great long chat into the evening even playing croquet (haven't played in eons and I won) while imbibing adult beverages. Between the afternoon and night we went through two great bottles of wine and a couple of fingers of my whisky I brought with me (TX, made in Ft. Worth TX).

They we a little disappointed that I was going to spend the night in my van and not their guest room. Urban camping ain't for me LOL. Sirens in the night and cars driving fast on residential roads although I only heard one of each. The next morning they made breakfast for me (made my own coffee as they drink decaf). After a morning of more chatter I departed about 11. It was already getting hot! Drove I-15 north through the desert with the AC going. Glad it works well. My outside thermometer was registering over a 100F at times. Could have just been the heat from the asphalt though. A long climb later I found myself at 6200ft and 80F. Pulled off, got gas and started looking for a place to hole up for awhile. Found a nice canyon with a running stream to help with protection from todays winds. Nice to be surrounded with green and running water again.

I might run over to Bryce Canyon NP on Monday. Let the weekend crowds subside.

Funny you mention that. I have an old friend in Vegas that wants me to stop by. I haven't seen him face to face in over 30 years although we've stayed in touch. He and his wife want me to crash in their driveway for a few days. I told them I'm not housebroken and won't sleep in their house. It's too hot in Vegas (for me) to be in the van during the day. I couldn't find a decent site west of them (within a reasonable distance) where there is a guaranteed Verizon signal at higher elevation so I went east and up instead.

Yeah, yeah, why do I need a signal when I'm out in nature? Because I want to be out in nature with a signal. Bambi just isn't entertaining enough for me.

He's at the tail end of his Promaster build and is finishing the wiring to his solar today. Just got off the phone with him. I have a feeling we won't meet up till next season in the desert

Maki2....
im afraid my current vehicle will be more of a burden than help... being that it is 17 years old and anything can break sooner than later.... also I am in very bad shape and can’t imagine being comfortable sleeping in such tight quarters... it’s very hard for me to move now living in s& b

I don’t want to hate this change.  So I’m trying my best to help myself with limited funds ...I don’t want to wind up going back because I’m so miserable!!!!
My tow vehicle is 15 years old and my tiny travel trailer was built 50 years ago. lots of full timers are out here using older vehicles.

My funds are limited but I am out here on the road enjoying my life, making new friends, seeing new places, etc.

I do not feel miserable because I take a tiny little mineral supplement pill everyday. You can buy it in a drugstore over the counter, Walgreens stocks it. It is called chromium picolonate, 1000 mcg. It regulates your blood sugar and it kicks ass on the depression and feeling miserable.

Yes....I know a lot a people have old vehicles....but i bet the ones that are doing well have had all their "bugs" worked out...It will break me to have to start fixing all my bugs as soon as i start out on this journey....but i will be taking that change anyways....as I will not have a choice if nothing better comes along before i take off into the sunset....

How long have you been taking this supplement ?   There are reports of severe kidney & lung failure  :s   How do you know it's the supplement that is helping with your energy & mood ?   It could be your just being out in nature & active lifestyle....
Anyways....I know you mean well with your tough love approach...and I love you for that     I will probably get that supplement anyways just to experiment & see if there are any changes....thank you

I miss the thank button also!!

Maki I put that supplement on my grocery list thanks.

I love, love, love that Dr Seuss poem and I think it fits so well the nomad life!!

I think we should print and frame and give it to everyone starting out. Hmmmm. Maybe give to the HOWA van recipients!

You know Maki, you really should post a photo of you vehicle hooked up to your rig once in a while. You do have the coolest looking set up out there...

Well I'm parked next to my daughter's house under a carport and I pulled my privacy curtain but I didn't bother to cover the back windows because they're pretty darkly tinted and I feel comfortable here. I did manage to change into my pajamas and get into bed in the dark. Baby steps. Tomorrow night's going to be the real test I'll be out in the wild.
