What a Great Idea!

That is a great idea!!

And as they said it's not just applicable for passing a large vehicle - it's always a problem here in northern Ontario with wildlife running out in traffic. They're hard enough to see when you're in the lead but when you've got something large ahead of you, totally impossible.j

I hope if comes to implementation stage!

Russia NEEDS this! I have lately gotten hooked on watching the Russian Dashcam Videos on youtube! Amazing the stupidity there. I thought American drivers were bad til I started watching them. Got my own dashcam the other day, JIC.
But the way Russians drive right into one another it likely wouldn't matter.

That would also be good when following a truck through traffic lights.

That certainly opens up options for safety, in conception.
In application, I think it would do the opposite: People have been trained to be hypnotized by electronic screens. I'm confident drivers who saw that on a truck would stare at it and not pay attention to the road, just because it is an electronic screen. At least until the technology had been widely adopted and became no longer interesting.

Well, it looks good, but what's it like in "real life"?  Suppose the sun is shining on the screen?  Will people look at a washed out screen, see no cars, and jump into the opposite lane?  There's no substitute for common sense, basic intelligence, which is sorely lacking.

Reminds me of a superbowl game, Desmond Howard was running back a kick-off, he looked up at the "jumbo-tron" screen and saw himself, no one was catching him so he slowed down!

Agree... and from the site;
Sadly, however, I have a feeling that when we do finally see the screen they will be displaying more commercials than roads.

Looks like litigation waiting to happen.
I can see me presenting my Dash Cam evidence showing the image on the truck rear door, dusty and distorted with a few cracked display panels.
"But your Honor, It clearly looks like ...... "
I couldn't imagine any trucking company opening themselves up to that level of liability.
Just my 2¢

Matlock is correct. There was the time when truck drivers would signal someone behind them all was clear or move close to the shoulder so a driver could see better. Then there was a couple of accidents followed by lawsuits. It looks good in theory but I have my doubts and would not bet my families lives on the reliability of a system like this. Best to wait for  a passing lane or a clear, unobstructed view with your own eyes.

That's not how it works in this country.  No truck company is going to VOLUNTARILY spend the money for this stuff.

IF it happens at all, it will be because the government decides it's a great idea and MANDATES it for trucks.  Truckers will be pulled over and cited for "unsafe operation" if their camera and screen are NOT working.

Also, we may not see the screens.  It may come down to the truck having just the forward facing camera and a transmitter.  A car stuck behind such a truck would get the signal and display it on their own backup camera screen.

Regards
John

Heads-up display (HUD) would be better, no looking away. :)

One day when technology gets cheap enough HUD will be standard equipment. I know I would like to have an aftermarket version right now but, just a dream.... without a bunch of cash.
I can remember not more than a couple years ago when a backup camera had no merit. Now almost every high priced vehicle has it as standard equip. Built in dash camera's are next then comes the HUD.

Its the legal system not cost that will determine if and when HUD is offered on cars.  Back in the 80's (?) GM lost a suit for an 0.01 inch antenna wire in the windshield obstructing and causing an accident.  I can just imagine the legal tangles with HUD.

Spiff, they have been on the market for a couple years now. Corvette and Camaro, 2013-Cadillac ATS, Buick LaCrosse, GMC Acadia and Toyota Prius, Audi A6, 2012-BMW 3, 5 and 7 Series, X5 and X6, and the 2013-Lexus HS 250h, RX 350 and 450h.
Costs start at $1000 - $5000 and it's the windshield that demands the big money.

I do agree that better to have a camera on the nose of the vehicle in front of you projecting onto your dash screen/HUD/google glass/co-pilot's helmet..... well anything that takes the responsibility off the lead vehicle, if that's even possible.
