Lol. I'm a light-hearted guy who loves people. I find it preferable to be able to defend myself in a life-or-death confrontation and avoid it vigorously than being caught in an unavoidable bad situation with no means of defense. Avoidance is paramount but I refuse to let bad folks rob me of my freedom of adventure too.

I will have to agree that Oregon is one of the most dangerous states I have ever been in, and the general public has a greater chance of being shot there than anyplace else in the US.

My statistics on this are at least as valid as the above. A few of the players are so determined that will do anything to accomplish their goals, including shoot bystanders. Stats are found on the 911 blotter and police reluctance to respond to a 911 call regarding gunfire. 


The only recourse in Oregon is to carry and to defend yourself. No one else will rescue you there.  -crofter

What do you base this statement on?   According to wiki Oregon's rate is average at most and is lower than sparsely populated states like Kansas and S.Dakota.  It's less than 1/4 of Maryland's rate.

FBI stats for 2017 show 100 murders for OR and only 58 were by firearms. There were 249 in Arizona and 514 in Missouri.

My analysis was based on personal experience, 911 calls made with no LEO response, lead and bullet holes in various things, having my camp shot up when hosting during two different seasons, others having their camp shot up last season and previously, dodging bullets at various times, frequent robberies by armed persons, federal land occupations by armed groups. As I found out, LEO's do not respond to gunfire calls, they are merely a note on their blotter. You are on your own in Oregon. 

Seemingly, the place is viewed as a sacrifice area by public safety and will only get worse. You will only find 911 calls, not investigations because there is not a response. So no stats will be listed on Wiki sites. Also funding was being cut for FS LEO's (responsible for campground areas only).

My experiences in Oregon are just the opposite from yours and I was never shot at. That doesn't mean that I'm going to tell people that Oregon is the safest of all US states and there is no chance of getting shot.

Locations reported on 911 calls were popular campgrounds  in Mount Hood National Forest. 
Not trying to dissuade you from going there, just suggesting a 'be prepared' mindset. 
After the last incident which prompted me to relocate, I spent hours counseling distressed campers from the packed campground thst was fired on. The campers could not believe either.

 This is far from uncommon.  L.A., last I read, had about a third of the cops per population density that New York did.  Many spread-out counties have the same or much worse.  When I lived two blocks from the police station, my roommate had multiple calls and visits to the police station there.  They told him that they couldn't even stop thieves from coming into the police station parking lot and stealing car stereos.  It would take them an hour to investigate complaints at our building two blocks away.  Later when I lived in Koreatown, there were shotgun shoot-outs on the street and nobody showed up.  During the L.A. riots, I lived four blocks from the police station and never saw a cop for the duration even as things were going up in smoke up and down the streets I lived in and was driving through.

No one is going to rescue you anywhere, unless you are very, very lucky indeed.  I'm much more worried about the cops arresting me for defending myself than I am optimistic that they will ever protect me or even care to do so, especially at any risk to themselves.  They'll show up around the 22nd to start mass-ticketing people to meet their quotas, though.

In general, I support the police.  But don't expect them to protect you, IMO.  They are the clean-up crew, and by and large they very much like it that way.  And even those that don't are often under-funded and have no realistic way to help you even if they wanted to.  Which some of them actually do.  There are some great and noble cops out there, no doubt.  But it's a screwy system at every possible level.  

If you're not completely on your own, you are one lucky person indeed.

I've decided to replace my truck gun; a 410 bolt action described in this thread several posts previous and some time back/ago with my Remington Sportsman 12 Pump; Have really wanted to replace the 410 for sometime now

Unto Plan B: Bought a 28" vent rib barrel for 90$ that fits my 12 ga pump and bought pistol grip made by Hogue - "Tamer" for 35$. My gunsmith "Henry Hacksaw" cut the 28" barrel down to 18.5" and with that Hogue Tamer grip my 12 ga pump is now equipt with an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel with overall length of 29". Legal everywhere I ever go and all for 125$ "Upgrade".

Patterns nicely too. 9 pellet 00 buck mag loads at about 25 feet are about size of a paper plate - 9 maybe 10 inches. I put a couple slugs thru it too at distance just because and they groupt nicely as well. Lot more punch than the 410, takes up less space in the truck and me being left handed easier to shoot and pump than working that right handed bolt on that 410.

Have always loved me some 12 gauge.

Shellback banshee elite 2.0 plate carriers with polyethylene/ceramic level 4 plates

Ambo RV doubles as bugout rig...

Have more choices/options depending on the trip at home but usually have at least one carry for each of us and one rifle (or “pistol”) AR 15 in

Given the current situation in the many parts of our country, I decided to carry a guns myself. I'm carrying a shotgun Mossberg 12-gauge, and a 9 millimeter semi-automatic. Between the two I think I should be okay I refuse to be a Reginald Denny
