I love the softness of fleece also against my skin...

I can only wear it over natural fabrics. It's plastic.

I love the Smart Wool socks. the problem I have with them is I wear them out to fast that plus the upfront cost make them impractical. highdesertranger

Try the ones posted in the walmart link. I have been wearing them for years, and they never wear out. I had to replace a bunch of them this year as mine were stolen from the dryer at the laundromat. longwearing and popular, altho the wool is rougher than the smartwool ones.    ~crofter

Try Darn Tough.  They'll replace them if/when they wear out.

I like Smart Wool too, but I think Darn Tough are even better - they feel better on my feet. I buy mine on eBay to get a few bucks off regular retail. I've paid good money for a lot of unsatisfactory socks in my life, so I'm definitely willing to pay more for these. They're literally perfect socks IMNSHO.

I knit socks, so I have some definite opinions about sock quality.

I have many beanies, but this one is the best for extremes due to the reflective lining. Columbia Sportswear, bought at Goodwill for about $5. I have also seen this reflective lining in coats.  ~crofter

Thanks Crofter. I didn’t know there was such a thing. I freeze to death on the ATV in the winter but I’d have to have some way of tying that in so it didn’t go flying.

In my younger years of having horses and mules if we knew we were going to sprint a bit we would take a piece of baking wire and use that and twist it under our chins. It’s a wonder we didn’t get caught on something and get beheaded. Ahhh Invincible youth...,

This duster also has another use. It has a full spit in the back and leg straps, so can double as chaps for your motorcycle rides (I do not have a motorcycle, so not a need for a duster for me).

I like the removable cape, since some days I feel less like a superhero than others :)

Mine is not split, but then my outhouse is in the van, so no need to venture out for that!

I also don't look like Trinity from the Matrix, as mine is pale doeskin so I can blend in better with the sand :)

Truly I have liked it best as an alternate type of weighted blanket. Never experienced that, and I really sleep well under it. Who knew?

I'm going to try something new this winter in the (unheated) van. I've found that typical night time temperatures in the Quartzsite area are in the low 30s in January and February.

First, fleece sheets. I have these at home for winter use, but don't have a set for the van. Secondly, a fleece night shirt. Never used a night shirt before, but should be more comfortable when getting up in the night than the usual buffy shirt. Would probably be good for night time desert streaking over to the nearest creosote bush, too. I'd look silly in a cape.

I sleep in fleece lounge pants (with fly (hard to find)) and a 32 degree long sleeve shirt. I use regular cotton sheets (slide easily) with a fleece blanket (sometimes doubled).

For those who need to look up what Trinity looks like:

Too funny. I'm glad yours is more of a tan, so you don't scare us with a late night appearance!! I prefer tan outfits for the same reason, the effect of camo without actually being camo.

Weighted blanket actually has a calming effect. I have layers of blankets on my bed, so depending on the temperature and my mood determines how deep I burrow under them. My weighted blanket is a doubled fleece tied blanket that I made.  At times I have worn it, but definitely not as classy as a duster.   ~crofter

I sleep with my down quilt over my head, with just my nose and mouth uncovered.

I agree, I always use a stampede string when riding. The cowboys will only hand you your hat when you are in the arena, they don't do that when out on the range. Baling wire stampede string is pretty hardcore! I think mine was leather, passed through and around the hat band. Link below for you Cammalu, you could always upgrade your stampede string to something more user friendly.    ~crofter

These have a cotter pin, for the mechanic in all of us. (can pass thru your favorite hat without damaging it too much)

Here is some gear that helped me get through a month in the PNW forest during the rainy season, could have been miserable but I stayed warm.  Helly Hansen raincoat (free), NikeGolf Storm fit pants ($5 at Goodwill), beanie with attached neck gaiter ($10 at surplus site), fleece gloves ($10 Walmart). The Nike rain pants are awesome, and have leg zippers to easily go over your clothing. They are no longer being made, so have to pick those up used like I did.   ~crofter

That reminds me, I need a second pair of fleece pants that are large enough to go over my jeans. They are great for wearing indoors over my clothes as an extra layer and for pajamas and lounging around without getting dressed up. Also suitable for trips to toilets at campgrounds in the early morning or evening because other campers really don't care what you wear as long as you a decently covered up and don't scare them by looking too creepy.

Damp and cool in Seattle this later afternoon, those fleece pants are sounding more appealing by the hour. I have a lot of work to do this evening on my self employment activity, might as well be toasty and comfy in this barely heated workshop space.

That sounds awesome, maki2, but where do you find them? All the fleece I am finding is the snug fitting kind similar to leggings. I have a heavy fleece "sweater" that is completely waterproof, but have not seen pants like those. The Nike pants shown above are waterproof but not fleece.    ~crofter
