My boyfriend pointed out an area of the city where I could park. It is an industrial area, so there are a lot of office buildings and even abandoned buildings. I was worried that it being so run down might mean that it was high crime. But, there are no manicured lawns with nosy homeowner's associations, so that is a PLUS. Also, WHITE VANS EVERYWHERE!

So, I used spotcrime.com, and there are FAR fewer thefts and assualts in this section of town than anywhere else. Also, in the area where I was harassed by the cops, there are a lot of reports under the category of "other," from law enforcement. The descriptions generally say, "suspicious person," or "suspicious activity." I think if a neighborhood has a lot of "other" reports, on this site, it may be a good way to tell if they are nosy and paranoid!

Maybe eventually I'll get a sense for what a good place is, but for now, I'm happy with the crime reporting site.

Now that I'm not quite so worried about where I will live.........I must do my homework. No more posting for me!

Was just checking to see if someone had suggested this site- and indeed you have! :)
I have found it to be most useful, and thought that it might be useful for others, too.
Thanks for the post!

re: http:/www.spotcrime.com

I would be careful of that website. I just ran our city and it showed no crime and another which I know has a high crime rate and it listed 3 crimes over the last 6 months.

This is a pretty interesting article about the services and crime reporting: http://www.safewise.com/blog/crime-reporting-websites-to-help-you-stay-informed/ I do not know if there are charges for any of the websites they are writing about, but there is quite a variety.

Industrial areas are less likely to see crime and harassment simply because there are less people there...less people/vehicles, less targets. However I believe most of them are under surveillance and see frequent-enough traffic during daylight/working hours to not be appealing to drug/vandalism crimes.

That's a lot of crime reporting tools. Good to stoke the paranoia that's for sure. Try to temper this information with facts about your chances of getting effected by anything. Much of this is less chance than a lottery win or being hit by lightning.

Goshawk, it's a crime when it happens to you, and paranoia when it happens to someone else.
