I am not new to vanlife, but I do need help.

I built a live in camper van a few years ago, and found happiness in a small space. I had a home, just preferred living in the van.

Today, I have a huge van project, a 4x4 conversion, and a covered utility bed that will be my new home.

I feel ya on the living preference. I had a house too...but I spent a lot of time instead in my project 77 Dodge 4x4 ambulance in the driveway, that I never got finished. All was sold and now have more projects with no house :)

I'd like to see pics of the utility 4x4!

You are lucky to have a 4x4 ambulance... i saw a 30 year old one sell for 12k a few months ago... It was my goal but they are too expensive.

I am looking at a 200's Chevy Savannah van, 1 ton, and putting a live axle under it. I am a college educated welder and metal fabricator. I'm also a handyman, was a lumber for a number of years, and I am good with electrical, and decent with carpentry.

I have a question I can't find answered anywhere, when am i allowed to get help from the regular forums? I had to have my email confirmed, then the above post moderated, and I still do not have privileges to get help other areas? I hope this isn't one of those elitist forums that look down on every newcomer, and make you jump through hoops before you can actually get constructive advice. Punishing every newcomer for advertisers slipping through is not the answer, IMO. Frustrating already struggling people defeats the purpose.

Anyway, I have some moral/spiritual questions, I need advice in that realm, and van/utility configuration suggestions, like bed placement and toilet placement, I would love to post pictures of the rig I have, but I do not want to confine all of that to THIS thread, or have to begin an entirely new thread in a more appropriate section, making my "introduction" thread my "help" thread I do not feel is appropriate, yet I cannot post in any other forums or any other threads.

I refuse to post threads of my rig I need help with in this thread, as I do not feel your introduction thread is appropriate to turn into a catch-all help thread, when there are better subforums for it, that I do not have access to, even after verifying my email, posting an intro thread, AND having even my response moderated. Where do I send pictures of me, my social security card, and ID, to prove I am a real person? About 1 in 30 forums i participate in are locked down like this. Some are almost impossible to participate in for newcomers. I'm going to probably look elsewhere, if I still have "insufficient privileges" after this. I thought this was the right forum for me, but it appears it might not actually be. I will continue to seek "Privileges" to communicate in other threads, but I will also begin looking for other places to post at this point, too, especially if posting this reply does not 'unlock' them. If this is a pay to play thing, people aren't living in their vans because they are wealthy, and is self defeating, in my opinion. As always, humans will find solutions, so my complaining may be in vain, and as I said, I may just take my issues and build elsewhere.

About my rig: I purchased the covered utility bed, and a 4x4 pickup truck 1 ton pickup frame, mid nineties, with IFS.

The issue with IFS is, it's more complicated than a solid live axle, and I was looking to cut the 4x4 IFS from the truck frame, and weld it to the 1 ton 2WD van frame, however, after inquiring in other forums to experts, "Frame alignment issues", such as not having a professional frame jig to be sure the axles are perfectly concentric, which I do not have. I do have a shop, with a hoist, but I do not have the experience to align axles and account for thermal weld expansion and contraction.

However, with a live (solid) front axle, it becomes easier, I will have to fabricate a front shackle mount, and I am researching this, but all I need to do is drill out the frame to install shackle bushings, which is easier given my toolbase and skillset than trying to splice an entirely different frame to another.

It has to be a van frame, because of the flat frame rails, whereas a truck frame has a 10" raise for the bed, which will put an already high covered utility bed, even higher. Unfortunately 4x4 vans are a relatively new thing from manufacturers, and I am still having to "Make my own", rather than just buying one from a junkyard and putting the covered utility bed on it.

My goal, is to have 12KWH of lithium batteries, 1600 watts solar, MPPT charge controllers with pure sine wave inverter, probably 3KW, possibly split phase but probably not, a sun deck, escape hatch on top, HAM radio, drone, sewer/septic with toilet, running water, winches front and rear, full cameras outside with DVR, TV, laptop inside, and a pre lubrication system I am designing to keep the engine and transmission lubricated fully before even starting the engine, avoiding "dry" starts for when I am extended camping. If I am allowed to post another thread, I will probably share what I am developing in this regard.

My older van I built that I had to gut because of mold issues had 240W solar, 4x4' sun deck, sturdy metal escape hatch i fabricated myself, 14 gallons running water with full pressure pump, stainless sink, sanded, stained, sealed folding tables, queen size bed, 50" TV, cellphone extender, toilet with 30 gallon septic, MPPT charge controller with lead acid batteries, pure sine wave inverter, inverter generator, fiberglass topper, above/below sleeping, and some other things. I added the topper myself from a different van, I simply cut the old van's roof off with the topper, then welded it to my van, I was able to do the project for about $300, waterproof, structural, and sealed fully, and allows me, a 6'1" man to stand fully.

I built this van, and found happiness in it, for the first time in my life, parked under some trees on a beautiful 200 acre horse ranch in Arizona. I remember, I assembled the van and "Wanted to see what it would take to live in it for 2 days over the weekend", well, 2 days turned into 8 months... I would probably STILL be living in it (And renting my house out) if it weren't for the acquisition of a Fiancée and two children into my life. We have since parted ways, her and I, and I am back to living in a mobile home, but life circumstances are forcing me to consider living in a "Covered utility bed". I am partly dreading it, as the vision has eluded me, and it will take a lot of work- I have struggled greatly in this life, to overcome past trauma, complex PTSD, mental illness- and am trying to heal from these issues, while not ending up completely homeless with one pair of clothes on my back.

Welcome Tundrawolf....I think the initial approval is there to help reduce all the spam that this forum gets...you should see all the crap that gets in, we have to filter thru it and delete the crap and then an actual human sneaks in and it might take us a short while to get in and see that, and hit the approval button.

Please forgive the delay and I hope you will enjoy the forum.

Thank you so much!

I tried posting in one of the main forums, but due to my circumstances being multifaceted and somewhat complicated, I got the error message, "Enter a reply less than 10,000 characters".

I appreciate what Bob has done, and he is one of the reasons I am embarking on #vanlife, but I really don't think this forum is going to work for me.

Can anyone recommend another vanlife, nomad, or other such forum? I am really saddened, as I was hoping to be a part of this community, I feel like I could have given/ received a lot of help.

So I tried posting a shortened version just highlighting the basics, and it still says, "Insufficient privileges". How do other forums survive? This one feels like a prison to be honest...

We've had some issues here with new members having trouble getting past the first few 'approval only' messages. It might be 3 messages or...well I dont really know what the current setting is.

Another forum I have been active on (not van related) requires 10 valid messages manually approved before they take you off of moderation. Its not THAT unusual these days with all the spam this forum gets...And I removed a few this morning. Or... should I have just let you guys see and read all the ads for **** *******?

In the meantime, be patient. If you type something out and you don't see it show up right away, give us time to find it and approve it. None of us are sitting by the computer 24/7.

And of course, there might be a forum software problem...if so... they need to know about it...and either way, it's certainly nothing personal.

On the other hand, if this forum is not the right 'fit' for you, then we wish you good luck.

I appreciate your candor, I am a hot mess, but thank you

Well you have 5 posts, lets see what happens on your next post.

I dont have admin privileges so I can't go in and fix this but the admins are aware of it.

@thetundrawolf , take heart and don't give up too fast. I am a newcomer as well and it took a little time to get OK'd to post anywhere, but I think it's worth the wait because there are a lot of very helpful and knowledgeable people here. And not getting to post everywhere right away is not personal!!

I am a moderator on a different forum and know that sometimes a newcomer will seem OK in the first 2 posts and then they suddenly start making 10 scam posts in a row or being abusive to others. So that's why it usually takes several times posting before more access is given. It's not about you, don't worry. To me it seems you have some info and experience that will be welcome here so I hope you stay.

After posting in several other threads, I am still getting the, "Insufficient privileges to post here." It does seem like an actual server issues, rather than a control freak issue.

Nevermind, it's across all forums (again).

The good news, though, is that I am allowed to post TWO OR MORE threads in the newcomers corner!

It is. I contacted an administrator, because it is still happening to me as well, and they replied to say several new people have complained about it. They said it is some kind of glitch and they will do their best to fix it. Sounds as though the same thing is happening to you. I can post in a thread but then a half hour later I cannot reply in that thread. On the same day I can post here but not there.

Please be patient. Let's hope they can figure out what's going on. I think it has something to do with some of the IP addresses that show up when either of you log in. Sometimes multiple users on the same IP can trigger a 'warning'...and sometimes a single user who is 'IP hopping' can trigger the warnings. It could just be the way your internet or VPN is connecting. All of this is way above my pay grade!

I'm not able to dig into the settings...and that's probably a GOOD thing...I'd have it all messed up and even let all the **** and *** gummie spam show up in everyone's PM inbox!

I'd probably be in trouble if I did that. Just sayin.

I suddenly started getting the "insufficient privileges" in all forums as well. However, I've been a registered user since 2019 and have been able to post freely. I'm also now showing as a new user. I did send a note thru the Admin contact page but have heard nothing from them, am sure they have their hands full. I'm not a frequent poster but when I do feel I can shed a bit of light, I like doing so. Maybe they(Admins) could at least acknowlege that there is an issue so we aren't just hanging out there...

Thx!

Hello Spinner yep..I did a manual approval on your post as well....of course I was off doing other things for a while.

Keep your fingers crossed!

The admin did acknowledge there was a problem in their reply to me. Said they would work on it. It would be nice if they acknowledged it to the whole forum, though. AND if they fixed it, of course, which they are trying to do.

I am inclined just to go away from the forum until they fix it because I get a little frustrated reading a thread, knowing I could contribute something (hopefully of value), but then find out I cannot post. And cannot carry on a conversation because even if I can post the first time it won't let me post again.
I know it's no one's fault and they are doing their best.

I can certainly be patient, but it might work best if I am patient while not coming to the forum until they fix it!

Patience is the best policy. Give them time. They will get you approved as soon as humanly possible. They just need to get through all the gravel to get to the gold.
These forums are a lot like mining. You need to get through all the overburden to get to the the ore. I have a website of my own and to get through all the posts and replies it take me about 24 hours to delete the junk and approve the good. But I don't have as much traffic as Van Living. I hope I do eventually, but I worry about all the spam and hate speech crap out there. It takes me a lot of time to get through all of it.

D'L, if it helps (on the patience front) to know this, there was a massive spam problem on the forum shortly before you signed up. IIRC, one thing the admins did to beef up the anti-spam shield was to require approval for newcomers' first few posts. (Trust me, if they hadn't, you'd still be annoyed right now -- just for a different reason.) Apparently that in turn has had some kinks that are still getting worked out (right?)

I'm sure it will get resolved soon. I'm guessing (pure speculation -- no insider knowledge or tech expertise here!) that it's better if you do keep trying to post occasionally, rather than taking a break till it's all fixed, because you (and the people trying to fix this) will have more data on what works and what doesn't. Just try not to get too attached to individual posts and threads for now? I know, easier said than done!
