I have drawn attention to Escapees every time someone has problems with mom-and-pop mail services. Escapees know how to keep you legal, they do it for a lot of full time folks. They have insurance agents and lawyers available. They have information sites and are upfront about any problems that could arise. The down side is you have to maintain membership.

I'd like to use S.D. as a permanent residence address, too.  When I leave MN, my plan is to drive to S.D., stay at an RV park for one month in order to get registered with a mail forwarding service, get a S.D. drivers license...

Actually, you only need to stay ln SD for one day to establish residency, not a month.

True.  But, as I said, I want to stay long enough to really establish myself there.  If anything ever happened on the road, I'd most likely head to SD and call it home anyway.  I want to get a local bank account, get my bank card, get insurance, my drivers license and even a library card.  I can do all those things quickly, but it will take time to get some mail (statements from all these things) delivered to me that I can bring with me on the road.  I'd also like to get to know the area a little and even meet some people.  I figure a month is good.  Spending my first month of van life establishing all these things early could make life easier for me in the years to come, especially if TPTB decide to choke the restrictions even tighter.

Not sure what or who TPTB is , but I think this statement has a lot of merit.  My experiences with some FS rangers indicates a trend toward tighter restrictions.

More and more people stressing the land polluting the air. Equals more and more regulations. You can call it restriction, But what is the answer? Look what happened at Bob's camp, there are so many invited that the rangers must now step in and enforce the restrictive regulations.

Blows my mind that there are THAT many people out there seeking the mobile life, and looking for whatever it is that moves people to seek out others (I'm autistic, so I don't **get** the social thing anyway), that it would become a small town in the desert! And rangers would be attracted. Yikes.
