Alluded to in the Burning man thread... 

I don't really get the allure of professional sports. I can watch some things like swimming, rugby, and a little bit of tennis, even an occasional baseball inning; but I watch those primarily because I played them (softball not baseball). 

Anyone else fail to see the draw to sportsball?

I've never understood how folks can get so riled up about strangers in a particular costume. This goes for team sports, jingoism, whatever.
It seems tribal to me. Us good! Them bad!

I am reminded that "fan" was shortened from "fanatic".

I don't understand how anyone can watch golf on TV.
I can almost, sort of, kind of, see the appeal of playing golf, if you need an excuse to take a nice leisurely stroll. But watching it on TV? I'd rather watch paint dry.

We like watching soccer/football and rugby on TV (My husband's from England) and when we kind find a cricket game at a local park or something, we'll watch that. He likes cricket, I like soccer, we both like rugby.
However, we don't have cable or satellite or anything like that. We don't much TV in general, and we almost never see sports on TV.

it's a change of pace,some else to do and there is no pill you can take that will put you asleep faster then golf or nascar

I never understood the emotional investment people have in sports, but then a lot of people don't understand how a person could become emotionally invested in a TV show or movie series. To each their own, I suppose.

On a related note, there is an amusing quote from the popular(though very dumb in places) show The Big Bang Theory that goes like this:

Leonard: How was your football party?

Penny: It was pretty good. We won.

Leonard: Oh, that’s excellent. It’s a weird figure of speech, isn’t it, we won when you weren’t actually playing. When we watch Star Wars, we don’t say, we defeated the Empire.

I know people who have wardrobes of their favorite teams gear, I mean $1000 or more worth of jerseys, hats, jackets, etc. Here, in my university town, they sell new cars in the team colors with team "accents" added on. Seems like a lot of expensive stuff... although I admit, I will put a Firefly sticker on my next van, but that's only $4.

Having spent 6 years living in Columbus Ohio (home of The Ohio State University), I know exactly what you mean.
I didn't go to OSU, and I don't give a rat's patootie about college level football.  But my coworkers all thought I should be "buckeye crazy" like they were.

I used to watch sports but not so much anymore. I did watch the super bowl last year and I will watch some games here and there. I have lost interest over the years all the big money and some of the athletes attitudes have turned me off. I will catch a high school football, baseball game if I am in town when they are playing. highdesertranger

The Colosseum was a very useful tool for a very particular purpose, as are modern-day stadiums.

Personally I enjoy watching basketball. Something about seeing teams execute things well appeals to me. I follow my hometown teams but I never really "got" getting mad at random athletes, other teams fans or what have you.

I think it's odd that athletes are often expected to be moral role models...I know if I was making over a million dollars a year from the day I turned 19, I would still be an idiot.
