Using a ground cloth or tarp of slighty larger dimenions than the tent allows you  to fold the excess over on top of itself around the outside edges and the crease of the fold needs to be an inch or so under the side walls of the tent.
Good information, Bullfrog. I have a “footprint” tarp made especially for my tent scheduled to arrive the day before I leave (I hope ?), which does exactly as you have described.

please do not dig trenches around tents.  this practice has been discouraged for at least 40 years maybe longer.  highdesertranger

No worries, HDR. : ) Using the words “dig” and “trench” was a little more than I meant to convey. I do not carry a shovel made for that. My former Eagle Scout husband and I always practiced “leave no trace” camping, however, it has been over 15 years ago since we tent camped!

it used to be very a common practice. when I was young I had a Boy Scout Manual that advised to do that and many other practices that are frowned upon today. highdesertranger

I too was a boy scouts way back in the 60's when they didn't have floors. I still have that manual. When our son was in, the manual had changed it to no trenching and a ground cloth. That was almost 25 years ago. I don't know exactly when they changed it though.

In the early '90s the Army was teaching to trench in Basic Training. Then again, we had shelter halves as a tent system. Lord, I hope they've made advances since!
