I friend got a bunch of beans and rice from a good bank an gave some to me. I grew up on beans and cornbread and love it, but it takes forever to cook so I never do it. Got me to thinking about a pressure cooker. Anybody use and one and willing to give me a basic introduction? What would I use one for besides beans?

Walmart didn't have one, I guess I would have to get it from Amazon. Bob

Hi Bob.
I too love beans and cornbread. I decided cleaning, sorting and slow cooking was too much trouble. I noticed different brands of canned pinto's in the Hispanic food section of Walmart and have tried them. Taste pretty good anyway, but a little ham or sausage, onions, peppers, etc. and almost as good as homemade. That way I only have to make cornbread. Am ordering a Road Pro 12 volt cooker since you said you cooked cornbread with it. I bet bread pudding would be good to.
jb
I received a aluminum pressure cooker as a gift and have used it once for cooking beans. The problem I found is you need to soak the beans overnight first then drain and cook. It does cook fast!. In a regular pot I bring the pinto beans to a boil then set them aside for one hour soaking. I then pour off the water, refill, add the meat, onions, etc that I fried while the beans were soaking along with the tomatoes, etc and cook at a simmer for about 30 minutes. This seems to work for me. I would suggest buying a stainless steel cooker instead of the aluminum one.

Funny you should mention this, I am set to buy a cheap stainless steel pressure cooker off of Craigslist. Seems like the right way to go for me. Slow Cooker just uses too much power by my standards.

Heidi and I use them fairly often. We have a large cast aluminum one that we use for canning as well as cooking and a smaller SS one that we just use for cooking. You don't have to soak the beans over night, you can pressure cook them for 5 minutes then wash them off and start your cooking cycle. We do that often with black eyed peas and ham which come out wonderful!

Last year, we used the crock pot a lot more while on the road. This year, we bought one of the Stovetek stoves that burns twigs or charcoal to use for the pressure cooker and hope to use it more for times we are boon-docked longer.

If nobody guessed, we have a lot of options for cooking with us

First of all I want to "Thank You", I had never heard of the Stovetec and as we are on he road primitive camping in remote areas full time for the past 5 years, and now having also a car (!!!) which we will mix with our motorcycle/sidecar, meaning we can carry more, I think it is a viable solution versus "white fuel" which is what I have been using for my MSR "Dragon Fly" stove! I like that.
I am also getting ready to buy a pressure cooker. It is ideal... I do not eat processed food and have been really missing making my own beans. With onions, garlic, cumin... you name it!
Right now we are in near Big Bend, Texas. Staying here on 10 acres that I bought about 3 years ago, Good weather and as there is no public land here, it was cheaper to buy this land a couple miles off the road for $150 an acre... (there is more!!!).
I have a wood stove here that I just converted as the big tent we had blew away (!!!). It is now a smoker, cook top, warm tray and will also make hot water... Yes, of course you need wood! A good Friend of mine dropped off a couple cords of Pecan wood and also about 100 miles from here it is a penny a pound if you cut it yourself...
Just made a video of my stove... (short!)

Anyhow... sorry to ramble!

Be well...
