Hi,
Long story short. I headed out 3 weeks ago (2006 Ford E350 high-top) from mid-Missouri hoping to catch up with and make some friends from this site.
However, about 2 days out the site went down and I made the rookie mistake of not making personal contact with anyone, so I was flying blind.
I wandered around Colorado and New Mexico waiting for this site to come back up.
Finally, in eastern Utah I had to make a decision, keep waiting or head for home. I chose home.
My experience as a newbie was mixed. I tried staying in Walmart lots but some said I could stay but I might get a ticket.
I hated paying $20 for a campsite but that's what I did mostly.
I didn't feel right trying the stealth thing, I felt I was cheating and encroaching and mostly felt like an animal looking for a place to bed down.
I was a nervous wreck.
The BLM land that I came across was out in the middle of nowhere, no phone signal, no tv and fuzzy radio.
I like human contact, I'm not a hermit and I like phone contact in case of breakdown/emergency.
My worst thing was once I stopped for a while with no signals, I was bored to tears with nothing to do.
The scenery was beautiful and a couple of times I camped next to people but they would wave but that was it.
Not interested in talking.
Soooo....my plan B is to stay home until Jan then head for RTR and maybe meet up with some not-so-hermit type folks
and travel together.
All-in-all, I would say it was a decent experience but I don't want to repeat it.
Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it, as the Country song says.
Stay safe!
