Yeah, so I am sick of wasting money down what seems to me to a black hole - rent. Rent allows me to have a roof over my head. But why? I can see so much more happening with my money.

My lease is about to be up in July. I refuse to sign another lease. So I got to searching for a box truck. I can totally see myself pouring money into a box truck and making it work. Everything would be mine, and I would not be pouring money down a black hole! Hooray!

As I read these forums, I am reminded of my childhood, and long road trips. I used to dream about converting a van, down to the secondary battery banks (mind you I had never seen any such thing). I dreamt of portable tvs and computers, a bunk bed. That's pretty much where my dreaming stopped, but now I am continuing and building on the dream.

Independence. That is what it is all about, right? It is for me. And I am a selfish miser when it comes to my money (think of old bearded woman in the mountains with a money stuffed mattress and money packed behind the picture frames). I give my last dollar to someone who is hungry, but second guess paying for something I did not desire in the first place. So putting my money into a tiny home sounds perfect for me.

I am unmarried. Divorced, actually. I work for a global technology company repairing robots. My job is very independent, and I work in a man only field.(which is why I refuse to learn about electricity - so when I ask questions about electricity I am asking for instructions and how tos - not the why's and wherefores.

This is long, but you understand why I have chosen this lifestyle.

Lots of views but no hellos? I don't feel welcome at all! :'(

I'm pretty new here myself, but WELCOME!!!

And I completely understand your motivation.

Hi! Welcome! One of the reasons you may get lots of views in this section is because its the girls room and boys may read but not post.

Also, people sometimes glance at new posts but answer later because they don't have time at the moment. Maybe they are at work, or something.

So give folks a little time, and consider posting your intro where everyone can answer!

Oh, ok.

I posted here cos I'm shy.

Well, I know shy :) you are in a good place here, this room and the whole forum! Your childhood sounds a bit like mine, as far as the dreaming part anyhow. Little cozy safe places and the open road....I was destined for a van :)

Welcome Squirbel, I just found you. Lets see, Michigan, we are kind of neighbors. Ohio.
Dragonfly

Hi dragonfly!

So are you pretty warm in your setup in winter? I'll have to take a closer look at your conversion!

Welcome! We've been in the boonies in southern Utah for the last five days. No internet so a late welcome!
Your plan sounds great. Do you travel in the US for your work? If so the plan is even better! :)

I travel, but only in a 50 mile radius. I intend to use the van as my living space and my weekend getaway vehicle. When I get old, and if I'm still alone, I'll retire to the boonies of a different country, most likely. After I have toured the contiguous US, of course!

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

Hi and welcome. I'm Margie. My other half, Jay and our min-pin, Bindi travel fulltime. Jay usually does all the posting, but I wanted to let you know that this is a great group and not to be shy about getting into the forum. <br>We met TonyandKaren in Las Vegas and they are wonderful people. I suggest you visit their blog.

Hun, Jay says there is some great info on that site, but it it long winded.
Basicly, a few of the right solar panels hooked to a little charge controller will keep a couple batteries charged pretty good if you have a fair amount of sun. You don't need a big expensive setup if you don't waste power.

That's most of what I know from what Jay told me and what I see from our 3 panels. Don't ask me to get all techie, but it works for some light and charging phones and laptops, etc. You have to have like 2 extra batteries to put the solar power into and to use power from.

Does that help at all??

By brining, I meant I was soaking up all the knowledge. Long winded was what I needed instead of all of these holey explanations that explain very little. I have learned so much from that blog (read all of his articles and will return to reread). Different strokes for different folks! Oi..

I get long winded myself but I try to censor myself so I don't bore people.

Hi Sqirbel,
The 1st live in vehicle I bought was an old short box truck that immediately needed a rebuit tranny, then I noticed the axle springs were messed up big time by some dufus, and at the time I didn't know enough to convert the box truck, so I sold it at a flea market at a loss, was in a homeless shelter 2 more months before I had a down for an old 19' Titan motorhome, which I parked on the side of the road with a retirement condo community on one side of the road and the back of a post office on the other, which was pretty safe to park after I finished my job each day, I did this for almost 3 years. It's a real toss-up what's best for you, I've done alot of searching on most of the bug out sites & etc. Box trucks get much less mpg than a van, but a box truck offers more security.

Hi Sqirbel,
I am new to this site as well. I enjoyed reading your post and your childhood memories. I am blown away at the sheer numbers of people who are fed up with the societal constraints placed upon us. I am about to begin my van set up and have found lots of useful information and ideas.

Sure is a joke when the American Dream becomes living in a van down by the river! Hee Hee!

I've been an extreme optomist all my life, even during the many times I've been down to my last dollar, I've found something to laugh about, and humor is what has gotten me through many rough times. How many times most of us have been in a hole, but what happens when things get so rough that your under a hole. Like you had to give up everything you owned in order to save your sanity someone was trying to steal, and you fled in the middle of the night with a small backpack, 1 person tent, sleeping bag, $84 in your pocket, and had to ride a bus. True Story, happen to me.
