Welcome if you decide to go North from 10 95 and 395 are great options with free camping.

Wagoneer, so good to know on the free camping, I am sure this route is much more peaceful and beautiful. I can see if I am going to be in the west and want to go to the cool places I am going to need to face my increasing fears of mountain roads without guard rails and quit  imagining going over the side. Right now I see those green mountains on the map and automatically look for another route. I can see all the camping on 95 and 395.
I need the downtime in nature when traveling to regroup, otherwise the dog and I are all stressed out at Walmart, rest stops and truck stops. Yes I will take the route u all are suggesting. Need to get passednthis fear! Thanks for taking time to reply:)

The recommendations to camp free around Lake Tahoe may be outdated. Although there are N.F.s around Tahoe they no longer allow dispersed camping. The desert around Reno is quite hot and windy summers. 395 south has an abundance of areas to camp without being disturbed. There are many outdoor stores in the area, you will find answers to many of your questions there. There is a tremendous amount of climbing and hiking (PCT) in the 395 area. Climbing locales most often have free camping. You are not required to climb (<; You will find that almost no one will raise an eyebrow to your vehicle, if anyone does, pity them. You will also find many solo women traveling that area in the manner you are. They, like you, prefer to be outside. If you are so inclined, there are seasonal jobs, every season, that go begging. I hope you have butterflies in the tummy, adventure in your heart and the boldness to give it a go. Very useful information thank u.

Buckwilt, very useful info, thank you. Yes I can see why they would not allow dispersed camping around Lake Tahoe, it is packed already. Getting information from the outdoors stores is an excellent idea, it is always a challenge to plan when I am not experienced in a new region, eg do stupid things. 395 sounds like the place to be. Happy travels to u
