Hello fellow travelers,

I am so glad to have signed up, I couldn't stand to read when I was stuck in a house for an unknown amount of time, made me too sad.

I am going to be living in my 2000 GMC Pick up truck with a cab on it, beginning in March or April. I will go from Chicago area to Reno area where my daughter is.  I will stay there a couple of months, then make a plan for winter.

My plan is to stay primarily in National Forests, or BLM areas.  I want to learn how to move up mountains when it gets hot, but will read on here to learn and get more ideas.

Thanks for sharing all your ideas, it is truly appreciated.

National Forests, or BLM areas & Reno are all very nice places !

Make sure you bring lots of water , first aid kit & warm clothes &
bedding

Welcome to the site, I am a newbie on here too, you want to do mostly the same as me, camp in National forests and BLM lands. I cant wait to get going...
Best of luck.

Welcome fellow midwesterner(SE Wisconsin here).  Best of luck in your travels and keep us updated on your progress and travels.

Oh we are awesome, adventurous people! Thanks for replies.

Have any of u stayed around Reno? Wondering about truck stops, Walmart, forests, free camping? Flew into see daughter few monts ago, looks laid back. Hopefully easy to sleep over

That post was not finished! Will finish when on computer! Off phone!

first off welcome. I have never overnighted in the Reno area itself. however I have stayed on public land all around Reno. there are unlimited opportunities on NF and BLM land around Reno. in the summer I would head up to the Sierras around Lake Tahoe. I think south or west of the lake is your best bet. highdesertranger

Casinos are an option on where to stay for a day or three, see casinocamper.com to see which allow it. When going through the area I stay at the Carson City Nugget.

So good to hear, unlimited opportunities! I thought it looked pretty open. A big part of this is to help my daughter learn the ins and outs of all this, we are from Midwest she is now living in reno, and she wants to camp and explore. so I want her to have a good experience, hopefully knowing places she could go on her own when I leave.

I am pretty happy anywhere other than inside.

For me, when she is not with me, do you know how far the closest public land is?

Thanks so much for responding

Blars, Carson city would be excellent. Are they picky about self contained vehicles? Would I be shunned in an old pick up truck? Can always go in late at night if it is a problem. Oh this is great, can cut down on the trial and error and wasting gas. Thanks so much, want to plan better with daughter involved. Thanks

Best of luck.

Welcome to you also. Yes can't wait to get going either, would leave tomorrow if I could. I saw in your profile you have been in calafornia much of your life, I think the main highway north and south is 5? Do you happen to know if truck stops are easy to use there? Like they don't mind?

Is there anywhere you would recommend from highway 10 to Reno? Any tips on California appreciated.

This site is a wealth of information and support for us!

Wishing you good fortune in your adventure.

I would stay off the I-5. instead take US-395 once you get into the Owens Valley 395 is stunningly beautiful. highdesertranger

I used to live in Reno, in a small apartment. They have great thrift shops there and at that time, really cheap prime rib dinners at casinos. Don't know if they still do,
Might be worth checking out.

Welcome if you decide to go North from 10 95 and 395 are great options with free camping.
