There might be certain situations where I would say that pursuit to engage an intruder in my home is appropriate... in this case, sitting on my couch, approving engineering expense reports while a glass of scotch is in my hand and an Earth 2 rerun is running in the background - I can armchair quarterback and say that I would ABSOLUTELY not have pursued the man that just pushed his way into my home, violently grappled with me and then kicked my cat. In the moment, while dealing with a younger, presumably stronger home invader who appeared to be a very real danger to someone 84 years of age... I'm not gonna be the backseat driver.

There are a lot of scenarios that, in retrospect, I might have dealt with differently. Scenarios, that when played out in imaginative, calm sobriety, one can plot the best course of action while mulling over the all possibilities with the luxury of time - well, one can establish a pretty clear course of action.

I'm relieved that the law will protect him when, all facts considered, he was still dealing with a violent home invader. I'm elated that he was legally able to defend himself in the sanctity of his own home from a violent stranger.

I'm saddened that an ill man who had lost all reason met his end due to symptomatic behavior of his illness and the lack of a responsible guardian.

[Only semi-related: I will admit that I am somewhat jaded from working in news in a metropolitan area where daily we have yet another violent offender being sentenced, buried or pursued who is lauded by family and friends as "really being a good boy." My level of remorse for true criminals who are injured in the pursuit of crime lessens daily. Again... the situation above is a tragedy, no doubt.]
