I know the topic of this forum is "stealth in towns" but I think that I'll get a better response by posting here than on one of the other forums.

We've been staying in parking lots for many years and we rarely ask for permission. When we have asked the response has mostly been a deer-in-the-headlights look. Then we have an employee who worried about doing something wrong. The employee could go higher up and ask or just say no and the problem is solved. So... no. Now that we've brought ourselves to someone's attention we can't possibly stay.

Here's an example of what happens when we don't ask. My "American Casino Guide" book says no RV parking at any of the Seneca casinos. We checked one on our way north and found signs prohibiting RV parking in their lot but we pulled into the casino at Niagara Falls and found a large paved lot with few cars and another huge gravel lot with a few cars and a big RV all set up, slides out. We tried the gravel lot but it was so dusty that we moved to the paved lot and stayed for five days. The security car looped around our section of the lot daily but never stopped.

For anyone who wants to visit the falls this is a great location. It's an easy, less than a mile, walk to the falls. There are bike trails, walking trails and pretty parks everywhere. You can walk cross the bridge and visit the Canadian side.

We're not stealthy at all with our little class C and mostly stay at places where we know we won't be bothered like Walmarts, Cracker Barrels, Flying J, casinos or boondock on public land. But I'm wondering if we should try other places and if members have gotten good responses by asking and what type of places are good to try.

yes, always ask if possible.
no, never ask
sometimes -it depends on the place
no, I'm in stealth mode

Usually, I've researched the places I overnight. So I know ahead of time whether or not overnighting is allowed. There has been an occasion or two where I haven't been able to find overnight parking and have been too tired to ask, get denied and have to look further. Therefore, I don't ask.

We have done a lot of over nightingale at Walmart (always ask, because sometimes it is a town ordinance and it will be enforced), rest stops and truck stops (never have to ask as those 2).

Flagstaff, Az is one of those places that has "No overnight parking" signs in all the lots, but you doesn't bother you when parked on a city street overnight.
I talked to a cop there and he said they only enforce the signs when there's a problem.
We were there a couple weeks and never saw anyone hassled at either Walmart or other places.

Now, Bend, Or is a different story...they will run you out of the lots there, but we were able to park on city streets without any issues.

Enforcement is different everywhere, so we sorta follow suit with whatever the local plan calls for.

Sometimes its better to beg forgiveness than to ask permission.

A bunch of us overnighters got rousted out of an Ormand Beach, FL Wal-Mart this winter at 3am!

Freedom parking. I like it. --- how about a list of repair garages in the area. Find one with a big spot that can fit you. After 6pm drop an envelope in the after hours slot saying you suspect electrical problem. You should be good until 9am the next day. Sears-Walmart-Goodyear etc chains always have branches in mall parking lots.

You can even check the repair shop reviews on CARTALK.com mechanics x files.

Offroad...In my experience, malls are the worst. Most have security and restrict overnight stays.
In Tucson, the WalMart on Wetmore is in a "strip" center. The property mgmt has it posted with signage. WalMart says "wish we could".
No prob tho...couple blocks away is a nice Sam's Club :)

So mall security will try to tow away a broken down car. That is awaiting service at the walmart auto center. That is not open.

Sometimes I do , sometimes I dont.......I stay @ alot of home depot & lowes (good Wifi!) if I end up in an area that prohibits overnite parking...I pull in and sleep all day! and travel at nite and find a rest area..(No sign said no daytime parking)

Everyplace is different............

I do but i always pitch it as a nap :) i only ask once even if i stay all the time. I don't always ask at every place like wally or kroger.

I'm taking liberty right now, at gas station next to my bank waiting for it to open

very likely depends on how long it's been sitting there.
