Hi all. Im new to this was going thru the threads. I was trying to find something on this subject. So I just made a thread. I want a nomadic life. I got my disabilty in march. Still waiting on the lump sum retro once I get that I want to stealth van it I think. Im wondering how people go around the address part. Im on for mental issues so how do I stay compliant while living life? Right now I feel like im in my coffin in a sick waiting game.  Any advice is really appreciated! My lawyer just keeps sayibg you can do whatever you want. (Hes a very busy guy) so I thought id see if I could find out more info. Also im in NY Idk if that makes a difference.

Welcome Erin to the CRVL forums! To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips, Tricks and Rules" post lists some helpful information to get you started.

Most of our rules boil down to two simple over-riding principles: 1) What you post should provide good information (like your introductory post), and 2) Any response to someone else's post should make them feel glad they are part of this forum community.

We look forward to hearing more from you.

you really need some type of address. a close friend, a relative is the best option. I am not sure about back east but Florida, Texas, and South Dakota all have options. Nevada and Arizona let you use a long term campground receipt. with all those options you are going to need a mail forwarder. there are several threads discussing this subject.

The concern for stealth is 99% overblown. Theres sooo many legal places to be in towns. And towns that are hostile caught onto van living years ago. You have reat stops and truck stops and regular gas stations and of course walmarts, cracker vbarrels, casinos, hotels, hospitals, airports, on and on.

Not to mention millions of acres of federal land.

Depends on what your mental issues are and what kind of support system or meds or therapy you need to stay compliant. Do not skip your meds and/or therapy. If you start feeling better, it is probably because you are on your meds and getting therapy, not because you are magically healing. Remember that, as a nomad, you will be cut off from any family and friends or health professionals that supply you with regular daily support. You will probably get better advice from your doctor or therapist than from your lawyer. Your lawyer is not qualified to advise you on this. Nor are random people online.

X’s 3

Being in non traditional housing can be isolating, because of moving frequently, not having “neighbors”, etc.

I think it’s important to create some sense of community, and to have support, wherever and however that works for you.

Good luck.

Before you leave you will have to set up some type of mailing address where mail can be held and forwarded to you. Just pick something in your current state of residence and then go hit the road for a while. Addresses are easy enough to change later on.

The things you will need to deal with is getting license plates renewed and renewing your driver's license. Of course also making sure you have the appropriate auto insurance plan.

You need to make sure you have your health insurance plan understood as to how it relates to getting care when out of your state of residence if your state is supplementing your insurance under a low income provision. I can't tell you where to go or who to see for that help.

If you get the basics covered you can work out the rest of the details of your new lifestyle later such as where you might possibly want to have a new state of residence. If you feel like you are in a coffin just do the basics and get out there on the road.
