Who has the cheapest bulk prices for dried and caned goods?

The grocery stores that I go to most of the time do not. If I am going to stock up for several months I will need cases of each.

Sam's club worth the membership price?

Others?

James AKA Lynx

Nice, but the commute from Houston Texas is a little hard on me. I am get to Canada some day.

James AKA Lynx

wELL you did not specify Texas.. o_O

last time I was in Texas to visit family we went to some markets, there they sold a lot of bulk Mexican style foods and base foods. Another place I go up here are Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern Markets. They have a lot in bulk, more organic and less GMO foods there. Rice is dirt cheap in 10-25kg bags as well. Since we went over the line at Brownsville, we visited the huge Mexican Markets there, wow.. wow.. nothing like that 2 borders north!

Might try heading into the Ethnic Markets and stores, see what you can dig up. Some of the cans are larger and a much better price than the WalMart or regular Grocery Store pricing and sizes, so better deals to be had. Next time I go to a place like that, I want to pick up a Tortilla press, they make it so easy.

Most grocery chains have regular sales on canned staples for 10 at $10. Stock up. Most will mix and match.

Yes, but I was hoping to get a case for much less if I buy 10 cases at a time. I may go to Sam's club on a free day to check out prices.

James AKA Lynx

James, you should try a wholesale grocery distributor if you can buy 10 cases at a time.

10 cases is a fairly large order for a non-business entity to place from a grocery wholesaler, and most of them will be happy to sell you that amount.

I used to work for a large grocery wholesaler called SYSCO...it is one of the biggest in the USA.

Those large cans people are talking about, those are #10 cans, and they are gigantic...you would have to use all of the contents at once, or store the leftover in a sealed container.

The #10 cans come 8 to a case.
http://www.thereadystore.com/containers/1071/big-10/

SYSCO has a mind-boggling amount of different groceries in unusual case sizes...for example, #10 cans of baby corn, 50lb bags of dry beans, and *cases* of food-service size chips.

The SYSCO food catalog is here:
http://www.sysco.com/customer-solutions/the-sysco-brand-family.html

It is organized in logical sections. It is HUGE. They not only sell their brand (which is almost always the exact same product as the leading competitor, but with ugly labeling etc).

The Hispanic stores are good too. GOYA sells very nice products in cans, and the even stock the gigantic #10 cans at the ones here in Texas and Washington, last time I lived there.

But the cheapest, would be grocery wholesaler, if you really want the selection of products in unusual case and package sizes that focus on bulk customers.

I know some people might say that you MUST be a registered business entity to order the food...it is simply not true. They used to let delicious ice cream cakes go to the employees for $3 each, simply because they were out of date. You think the dates at the consumer stores are strictly monitored? Then imagine a warehouse shipping $3 million dollars A NIGHT of food out of their truck docks.

If you are not a business entity, you just have to pay them in debit/cash, or have excellent credit that they are comfortable with. Once you get the salesman on the phone line, he will be happy to sell you product. All of the SYSCO sales team is based on comission and a base rate. So, if you buy, they win. No business license needed.

They just sell things in sizes and price points that are too large and too expensive for the general consumer...those #10 cans are BIG!

There are a number of grocery wholesalers, but I actually KNOW SYSCO...used to pull orders for them. I was working with the food constantly. I know what they have, and how they manage the quality. It is worth it if you want 10 cases. They will hook you up.

An article, that may or may not piss somebody off:
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/food/2007/02/every_bite_you_take.html

how about restaurant depot?

ive never shopped there so i cant offer opinion but just thought i would mention.

I just split the cost of a Sam's Club membership with another frugal RVer, so it cost us each $20 for the year. We plan to go together quarterly to stock up. On my first trip, I saved at least $9, which is almost half my cost. For me, I think I will save money.

If you want to come shop in Ohio, you can go thirdsies with us on our membership!

Here Sysco is a restaurant supply company. That is why they have institutional size packaging. A cosco style company called BJ's sends free 60 day membership cards on a regular bases.
The club stores let you shop at a premium, maybe you can find a "friend" to help.

10 cases. Most large cities have a food distribution area. You need to score where grocer stores shop. Kind of hard now days as every thing is big business chains, even Mom and Pop.

I know in WA,OR,CA,NV,ID and AZ that most WINCO grocery stores have a big "bulk foods" section.
Also, check with a nearby Mormon church and find out where their nearest Home Storage Center is located (you needn't be a member to use)
KinA

I travel ca, or, and nv. never seen a winco. will have to do a search. highdesertranger

I usually go to Sam's. For some reason I've never lived near a Costco. I buy 50# bags of beans, rice, flour, sugar, salt, etc. I then bring it home and re-package it. They have the great big jars of almond butter at a good price. That right there saves me quite a bit of money. I wish they would start carrying rice milk.

When I live near enough to one to shop on a weekly basis I save a LOT on produce(as long as it isn't the Sam's Club in Midland or Odessa).

Unfortunately I moved to far away from my source of raw honey in 5 gallon buckets. OMG good!

If you are in one of the areas they service, Country Life Natural Foods can save you quite a bit. www.clnf.org I buy coconut oil by the 5 gallon can through them and get my oil for a fraction of the price of buying it in pint jars at a health food store.

I second the suggestion on the Mexican grocery store. I love black beans, got hooked on em when I lived in Mexico, and they are hard to find in bulk. Many times a Mexican grocery store will have them in a bulk bin at a good price. Often there are bins of dried corn, rice, dried chili's and other sundries. Not to mention that they have the noodle soup packets that are so awesome as the base of a soup, real zote soap, little cans of casera salsa and my favorite......papayas!

omg txgypsy 5 gallons of honey need to sell the farm to afford that. you wouldn't believe what honey goes for in so cal. I buy mine when I go to orygon. highdesertranger

Do what I did....become a beekeeper. I no longer sit still long enough to have my own bees unfortunately. I'm hoping to find a beekeeper where I'm spending the summer that would like to barter some of my labor for some raw honey.
