Just found a spot here in town in IL that charges $280 a month with water included. Problem is in the winter you can't hook up directly all the time , only as needed probably because of freezing issues. Also have to be out in May as the spots are all reserved for the summer. Bummer. I might use this place for the winter tho. I'll have to stay here in IL for another couple years so this might be doable for me. Summer won't be too bad to find another place to park.

They don't build heated water hoses there? We run the water hose heater once we start getting overnight freezing temps (heat tape is temp controlled... on once the temp falls below a set temp and off when temps rise above a certain temp). We plug it in and the leave it alone until spring. We actually pump directly from our fresh tank but the hose stays on and fills the fresh tank until full because we have a float valve in the tank.

One thing we found when we were out 20 years ago and needing to support ourselves was that camping far away from towns or cities did not always work. It took a bigger population center to provide the jobs we needed. They tended to be pricier than the more remote sites that worked well when we were not working.

I had a Youtube channel that I posted RVing information on, including campground pricing and facility info, but lost my old channel in this new Google+ mess. Can't seem to get it straightened out. I'm moving my RVing videos over from the old channel to a new one, which is taking time. Got Dailymotion and Vimeo channels started, just in case the Google+/Youtube management team stay suicidal. Vimeo does not like loading my older videos, might drop that one, too.

These sites are a good way to share this sort of info. There are some channels devoted specifically towards inexpensive RV/van living with some good information. Some are just chatty, but that can be good, too. The channels are free. All you need is a cheap camera, access to some wifi, and in Youtube's case, a high willingness to suffer the fools who run the site.

Compass rose, I have no idea why the water issue is the way it is. I just know what I was told. Have to run a hose to the laundry room when u want water. Weird yes!

RV-Kitty: Try Rainbow Country RV for an inexpensive (by Florida standards) park about 6 miles outside Cedar Key. When we were there in 2012, their monthly rates were about $300-$350. Full hookups. Clean showers, bathrooms. The owner/manager lives onsite. There's a mixture of full timers and seasonals.

I have a Youtube video on my old kaput channel that I will try to get uploaded to my dailymotion channel in the next day or two. Right now, I'm out of Tmobile wifi high speed and uploading keep locking up on the unlimited snail speed. Maybe I can go onto hubby's Verizon and use that, not sure how many gigs he has left. Try the channel in a couple hours to see if it's there.

RV-Kitty: I was able to get the Cedar Key, Rainbow Country RV video loaded on the Jean on the Road Youtube channel. Check it out. But the dailymotion uploader keeps choking on it. Geez, I need to learn to use this bloody Apple computer and its goofy video file procedures. I got spoiled with Youtube, which just sucked the videos off my camera.

I'd like to favorite or thumbs up this whole post, I'm very drawn to NM and I know I'll be spending time there in the future and this post will make it easier! thank you :)

I'm new to this and haven't a clue. Not in RV yet, but within a month or so we will be. Please explain "step outside the normal channels". For example:__________ Thanks for any advice.

Wow. Thanks for the links. There are some great deals in there, especially for 6 months or a year.

I've checked out many of those RV parks as well. I don't see how folks could go wrong when looking to save some money during the winter months. It sure beats what I'm paying here at the Four Seasons RV park in Salida, CO. The winter rates for the upper campground is $400 plus electricity. By the time you factor in the propane, it gets pretty pricy.

I had to cross Riolago off my list. No guns allowed on property. They did a good job of clarifying their rules though. No surprises there.

Some parts of the country are pricey, depending on the season. Check RV forums, blogs etc. They always have good advice. Winter, Palm Springs, not so much. Quartzsite, Yuma, Tucson, Phoenix OK !

If you need to be close to entertainment, shopping, work, or medical facilities, it can be a trade off. The further away from the conveniences you get, the cheaper the rental. On the other hand, the extra time and fuel involved in commuting or getting into town is a pain, especially for vans or smaller RV's that do not have a toad and have to break down to go anywhere.

Donedirtcheap, that's a useful list of links. Thank you.

Sorry but Vagari posted those links, i just quoted when I commented on them. :)

Looks like this old thread is still alive and kicking. Will need to PM a few folks who posted and ask them what they find comfortable for RV size and for park accommodations. When I factor in an RV cost over five years my budget is too high compared to just renting an apartment.

Great info in this post! I think the "Boondockers Welcome" site is very cool! A great way to help out fellow-Mobile-Dwellers out!
Thanks to all the folks who shared info and especially links!

weird that the seventh page lists no posts and no thread. maybe a glitch or someone posted then deleted, then the message thread glitched

You definitely have to factor in your needs. Do you need a specific area? A location where you can get a job? You also need to look hard for deals and dont' assume a park is too expensive.

For example, here is a section of the Salt Lake City, Utah, KOA that is for year around full timers. You might think .. whoa .. KOA = dollars. Under 15 years and 37 feet the rate is $350 per month plus electric. Not bad for a large city plus the train and bus both stop right out front. It's only a 5 minute ride to either downtown or the airport. You could probably find a very tiny, low end apartment for around $350-400. So staying at the RV park is saving you anything.
