Camping at Quartzite

I splurged and bought my brother a fleece lined hoodie from LL bean it wasn’t cheap. It was super thick and beautifully made and didn’t stretch or fall apart. I kept it with me for his visits. Then when I sent it home with him it disappeared and a cheap version appeared. It wasn’t near as warm or well made. If you can spend the money I recommend the LL Bean version. In fact when I want something to last if I can afford it I buy from them. In the end I am replacing the cheaper stuff enough times that I should have just spent the money.

Weather in Quartzsite is better than North Florida. We are going into a 5 night stretch  of lows in the low to mid 30"s....

The weather's a few degrees better in southern Imperial County near Yuma and Los Algodones. If you don't require Quartzite's crowds and ambience.

On really cold nights I wear a cotton beanie and a hooded sweatshirt in a mummy bag. The hood keeps the beanie in place. Layers are key.

A mummy bag can be augmented with a silk liner for an added five degrees, and a breathable reflective bivvy bag to add ten degrees.

:a few high clouds does act like a blanket to keep ground level warmer. But so far in Quarzsiite those thin, high vclouds clouds have not prevented my solar panel from fully charging my battery by 9.am.

The clouds sure  do work for making beautiful sunrises and sunsets so keep your cameras handy the next few days.

I hear that the cell phone coverage can be spotty at Imperial Dam. If so I am better off in Quarzsite this month as December is the busy season in my Etsy store. Easy enough drive into town to the post office from La Posa South.

I was wondering how AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon work in the Q area, with so many customers online there?

The signals in QZT are good, with several towers in the area. The trouble is bandwidth. Things can get really slow during high season. However, with the border closed, there won't be any Canadian snowbirds around this season, so with fewer people in the area maybe cellular won't get as clogged.

 Verizon reception is pretty good. Generally, the closer you are to the main road, the better. And of course, the smaller he crowd, the better.

I don't use a booster, I'd be curious to know wheher a booster makes  much difference here.

I use Verizon and am at Imperial Dam away from the main road. My newer phone (S10+) gets 3 bars mostly. My older iPad (2nd gen Pro) gets 2 bars. Added a booster and the iPad is at 4 bars, the phone at 3-4, so well worth it to me.

If you need high speed  for streaming or doing larger uploads and downloads it is likely worth it. If you are just checking emails and doing some text messaging or occassional phone calls  now and again one or 2 bars is generally adequate for that.

If you are working remotely then you will for sure need some type of booster in areas where the signal is not always great.

So it is up to you to determine if it is or is not worth it, that is all about what you do.

I've been coming down to Quartzite & Bouse for 8 or so years and this is the driest I've ever seen it. The creasote bushes are more brown than green and many suguaros look like they're dying. Wildlife is pretty sparse too. Hope it rains soon.

Due to the dry monsoon (zero rainfall) and higher temperatures (third highest average) in recorded history during the dry monsoon this year.   -crofter

Beyond Imperial Dam. Further down. Only pointing out options for slightly warmer temps and maybe less crowding.

Pilot Knob LTVA is just south of I-8 (Felicity, CA "Population 2" exit), just west of Quechan casino and the Los Algodones border crossing. Flat area with line of sight to a number of cell towers. Close to Yuma with Walmart, etc.

Wzyne49, thaks for the Pilot Knob LTVA suggestion. That is one I will check out when I explore locations closer to Algodones that have good cell coverage.
