So I've look around the forum for a thread on books on the subject of car/van dwelling and I haven't really found anything. So...if I missed I'm sorry. But ... Can anyone recommend good books on the subject of van dwelling? Anything from journals to "how to" guides would be of interest.

Any thoughts?

I picked up a book at the used book store called The Girl's Guide to Homelessness, which is supposedly the story of a girl who found herself living in a travel trailer in a Walmart parking lot. But it turns out there was maybe a chapter's worth of practical details about living in the trailer, and the rest of the book is about falling in love with some dude online.

So, if you see that one around, move on. Or you can have my copy. :p

I've read a couple that weren't worth the cost of shipping.

This is amazing: http://cheapgreenrvliving.com/priusliving.html

I think most people who live in their vans put together web sites and blogs but probably find it costly and awkward trying to get a book published. Look at exaples offered on the cheaprvliving web site! [Just click on cheaprvliving at the top of the page, to the left of Forums].

Thanks for the responses ... I kinda figured this to be the case...

I've read a few:

http://www.amazon.com/Car-Living-Ma...oks&ie=UTF8&qid=1337138894&sr=1-3

This was a bit out of date, and the tips were not that great. She tackles it more from the psycological point of view, talking about social stigma. There was nill information about how to keep warm. Nor was there any details on how to use inverters etc.

This is by the same author, but I have not read it:
http://www.amazon.com/Car-Living-Yo...oks&ie=UTF8&qid=1337138894&sr=1-4

Then there is this:
http://www.amazon.com/CONSECUTIVE-Y...oks&ie=UTF8&qid=1337139359&sr=1-1

I like this. Oh it does read a bit crazy, as he has some paranoid views about governments, but the information is there, by some one who obviously know his stuff. Defintly good for a car dweller.

I've also read this one:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Tiniest-M...W/ref=pd_sim_b_1?ie=UTF8&m=A24IB90LPZJ0BS

This is a not bad guide to living in vans. It isn't though so much about luxury. More about practical every day living. I'd reccomend this one if you must buy any book on living in a van.

And this:
http://www.amazon.com/Vanabode-happ...S/ref=pd_sim_b_2?ie=UTF8&m=A24IB90LPZJ0BS

This is a basic guide, but due to the author's way of thinking, it is more a guide to living very basically in a van. No details on power generation, plumbing or gas / stove.

But I have to agree with others, the best info on vandwelling is on people's web sites.

There is one book that is sort of what you might be looking for. It is "Roll Your Own" and it is rather old. The copyright is in the 1970's. It is mostly about remodeling post office vans, UPS trucks and small buses to make a Hippie mobile. It might give you some great ideas.
