I was wondering if anyone has ever used a SUV tent; Something like this....

My dad sews canvas tents, and I was thinking about designing one like this. Anyone have any experience with a set up like this on the back of a truck with a topper?
Any thoughts on pro/cons of having this kind of set up? I'm not worried about stealth obviously. I would design it so that the tent would be freestanding. The "tunnel" would zipper back into the main tent body when I need to drive the truck off for something.

Pros: I think it would be nice to have the standing and cooking space. Also a slightly more pleasant place to be if the weather is rough.
Cons: Cost (about 100 bucks in canvas, plus a case of beer for dad). Takes up more precious space. Set up/Take down time.

Thoughts?

I have the same vehicle Nissan Xterra shown in the pic. I've been wanting a setup like that also.

The tent itself could be stored on the roof rack.
They are neat but prefer a smaller 2-3 man dome tent.
10-15 minute setup and take down. Light weight. Great for 3 seasons.
Winter I stay in the truck or find brick and stick shelter. =]

Awning does the same job without the fuss or hassle of the tent. I owned something like this for a vanagon. It meant that I had about 10 minutes of put up time when I got to camp. Then its not like you can drive away once its put up, so you're stuck there unless you want to incur the cost of taking it down. Taking it down was about another 10 minutes unless it was icy or cold the night before. The add the extra time to dry it. Occasionally, I'll want to leave a site before the next morning (if only to get away from people who are partying or whatever). In situations like this the attached tent was a real pain in the ass since I was getting double time for set up and take down. Nice Fiamma awning goes up and comes down in about a minute if you're clumsy with no worry about ice or wet.

I have thought about one of these, but was worried about their ability to keep the bugs out around the area attaching to the truck. Of course it depends on your location. In the Southeast, the weather is your friend, the bugs are not.
