Workamping question.

Is anyone familiar with Hog Island Meats in Jackson Hole Wyoming?

Specifically, how did they react to a vandweller.

They are the first to offer me work.

If I may quote them. "The reason we chose to reach out to you was from your photo..."

To them I look like someone who does not mind cutting up and packaging dead animals for 10 - 12 hours a day.

Working in a slaughter house is literally very close to the worst job I could possibly do. Ugh.

Winter in Wyoming? No thanks... That's a a whole 'nother level of van dwelling.

My first question to you was going to be "Were you posing with a meat cleaver in that photo?" Maybe you just look nice and "outdoorsy" like their clientele will look?

I Googled the company. Then I clicked to go to their regular website... and my WOT alert gave me a warning that the site had been reported for phishing. I don't think that means that the company itself was involved but maybe someone more tech savvy than me would know. WOT recommended leaving the page so I did. Sooo... you might just want to look into this further.

So then I looked at their Facebook page. From what I see, they process meats for hunters. You bring in your wild game and Hog Island processes it for you. That says to me they may only be open during hunting season???? They had only 4 reviews.. all from last year.. but all were 5 stars.

Can you use plug-ins in your rig? Maybe they'd let you park at their facility and plug in so you do not freeze and any water lines do not freeze?

They probably have a locker room and showers...that would be a plus.
Is the pay worth going?

I am not sure of the locker room but the pay is good

"Compensation for your hours ( we start at $12/hr)"

" Our busiest times are September, October and November. You guessed it, wild game. During this time of year we have two shops open for processing."

I have not called them yet but it looks like three months

Jackson hole has a permanent population of 10,000, and in the summer they hire another 10,000 temp workers for the tourist season. They are well aware that there aren't enough places for people to rent so they camp anywhere they can. My guess is they couldn't care less where you camp.

If they give you training in butchering, I'd pay them for the opportunity!! It's a lost skill and you can make money with it every fall and always get a job.

it'll be a very cold three months but if you have a Mr. Buddy heater and a good sleeping bag you can do it. Then come down to Quartzsite for the winter and you might can get a job there, but for sure you can line up your campground hosting job for the summer.

A slab of ribs and a little jerky, coming up.

Some Vets will babysit during the day. That might be a necessary option during cold snaps while you're at work. Don't run out of propane.?

Sorry, I'm sure you know all that & have it under control. It's just when I seen Fido.....

Thank you for your concern, no offence taken.

She does real good in the cold, it's that poodle fur.  we may concider the dog sitter option if need be.

  She's fun, a good companion.
When it's time to go for a ride. Just say RIDE, and her ears purk up and she runs past me to get to the van

How cute, I could see her excitement and running for the van.

I know cats and dogs can tolerate cold better than I give them credit for. I was raised on a farm. I've just gotten soft over the years.

Are you taking the position?

I took the position as apprentice butcher.

I am told I will start training as an Elk skinner. Or skin whatever else happens to be brought in.
Then on to chopping and sawing it into pieces suitable for the dinner table.

I need to be there Monday Oct 12.

:s     I think I need to start a new post for the following question. Here is a brief summery.

I have only a short week to prepare my van and would like some advice on a to do list.

An opportunity as popped up much sooner than Expected. I need to hit the road in 4 days

Problem;
Currently my van has only a comfortable bunk. there are pictures on my blog.( a work in progress)

Question; What should I focus the next four days on?

Food preparation?
Heater?

Jim...I think I'd work on staying warm.
Some Reflectix cut to press fit over windows. That goes quick and store easy when not needed.
A propane camp stove and a few cooking items, etc in a tote makes a quickie kitchen.
Grab a blue water container and bucket with Luggable Loo seat are always good to have along.
A few throw rugs will help on the floor for added warmth.

Good luck on the new gig.

I think that's good advice from Jay -- cover the basics of:

1. Heat (I see a Mr. Heater don't I?)

2. Water on hand (cooking and clean up)

3. Simple kitchen (maybe you'll get free meat now and then to BBQ)

4. Toilet (you may have read what Bob and many or most of us do.. 5-gallon bucket and kitchen trash bags.. a little litter...I also then seal each in a freezer quart bag)

Because you will be in a camping/outdoors sort of place, you may find you can pick up lots more goodies around where you work to start adding more comforts.

We're excited for you!
