Hopefully st my folks' place with my new travelling home!!! Spending the winter in prepping it, fixing it, mod, etc.

But "cooler in the South" and "warmer in the North" are relative things.......
It'll still be warmer overall in the South. New England area is supposed to be extremely cold this winter.

Any tips on Florida from folks that head that way? Jan

Bring your coats. In deep winter in north Florida, night temps in the lower twenties and high teens are common. Last winter was quite mild in comparison.
Had some Indiana relatives come to visit one year, and did not bring their coats, thinking sunny Florida is "always warm!" :)
They learned the hard way.
But on the bright side, we have none of that funky frigid white stuff y'all get your roads covered in.......

Mr. Pico and I will be spending the Winter in Ehrenberg and Quartzite, Arizona....With side trips to Yuma and a tour of the Imperial Valley...These places are my favorite places!

I'll start heading south as the cooler weather pushes me down. I can handle temps down to the twenties at night but prefer them to be above 40°. So Oregon coast, CA coast, maybe as far down as San Diego by Xmas. Thinking about Vegas area later, even though it can get chilly. My nephew is going to be vandwelling in Texas and is trying to get me come there. I'm not feeling it though. It's a lot of driving to there and back. I'll see.

lee, wasn't it like 4 or 5 years ago there was snow on the ground in all 50 states. but I do know what your saying the snow doesn't hang around. highdesertranger

I am leaving for SW Florida on 11/2/14. I will be camping (primitive) in the 65,758-acre Fred C. Babcock-Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area. It’s 4 miles from a super walmart and about 7 miles to downtown Punta Gorda. Cost for annual permit is $26.50 and you can be there 24/7 from November 1st thru January 19 then weekends 5pm Friday to 9pm Sunday the rest of the year.

Shooting range is not far from campground so there can be a little noise in the daytime.

Projected cooler temps are welcome for during the past few years the temps have been way above average in the winter months.

SoCal, doesn't matter where, it's always been my dream to escape the Midwestern winters I've endured for 32 years. No matter what the long range forecasts say, is got to be better in SoCal than Illinois.

And as we Native Floridians say, "Remember, the Gators have right of way!" ;)

Haven't made it to Las Vegas yet, looks like I might still be in north eastern NV for the winter. A warmer winter could be nice here but could also mean more snow! I've been snowed in here one winter out of 9, another warm winter the road flooded and couldn't get through the water and mud for a month.

After a stay in Big Bend NP, I'll be off to AZ. No one place but mostly BLM land here and there.

Looread - good notes on Florida camp boondocking areas. As long as you don't mind the humid swamps-bugs-reptiles you are good.

I'll be heading south from upstate new york around the end of the month, sooner if the weather turns cold. Looking forward to exploring the apalachicola nat'l forest and the little towns around the Florida panhandle. I'll be painting and drawing as I go (trying at least!) so I'm excited to see some new places and faces.

Once it starts getting too chilly, i'll head down to the Ocala N. F. for hiking and some swimming in the springs. Then early spring perhaps in Savannah before a nice easy migration up the coast. Want to spend some time in the Outer Banks, Assateague and Chincoteague as I've never been there.

I spend most of the year on my homestead in a very rural area, so the ocean is always a great joy to see again.

If anyone's going to these areas, please drop me a PM and maybe we can swap tales and share a cup of coffee etc.

Ok, happy trails and safe travel to all!

cheers
