Thanks for all the replies. I have another query about dumping at a dump station. I have only seen videos of RV's dumping black tanks through hoses. Where would one dump the contents of a porta potty that was filled with cat litter or something similar. If you have any experience with porta potty dumping either at a dump station or say a gas station, please share. It seems very unsanitary to me to take a bag of poop and leave in any public trash bin.

Leaving a bag of poop in a trash bin is no more "unsanitary" than leaving a used baby diaper, or a bag of doggy doo.

as far as a porta-potti you just dump it at a dump station. I have done mine many times. in the instructions they show dumping down a toilet, just substitute the toilet for a dump station. here's the instructions for a Thetford most work the same,

dump stations only want sewage, they don't want kitty litter or plastic bags. same with vault toilets. highdesertranger

A porta potty doesn't use cat litter. It uses a chemical that you add to the bottom tank to help break down the waste and to 'control' the odors. I say control very loosely because most porta potty users will tell you that you either smell the chemicals or it smells like a badly overused outhouse.

Cat litter is used by those using trash bag lined buckets. Most of those using the cat litter method, empty the trash bags out of the bucket on a daily basis, otherwise the trash bag becomes too heavy to deal with. The smaller trash bags are tossed in a dumpster or trash barrel.

I used a porta potty for years and years..they were the only thing we had when vanning first started back in the early 70s'. The porta potty comes with a built in rigid 'hose' (for lack of a better term). You separate the two sections of the potty, reposition the 'hose' and pour it down the sani-dump hole the same way as the RV's do with their flexible hose. 

Cat litter is not something that is poured down a dump station. It's solid waste (as compared to feces as solid waste... ) and goes to a landfill rather than in the wastewater treatment plants.

I somewhat agree with you about leaving a bag in a public trash bin. I try to select dumpsters that I know are going to be handled mechanically as opposed to a trash barrel in a gas station or parking lot that is going to be handled by a human. Lots of people do dump their poo bags in the trash barrels, I just prefer not to. There is one dumpster I will not use - it's the one at the store/laundromat/shower in Ehrenberg. Not that it's not emptied mechanically but that it's the scene of constant dumpster diving. The public transfer station is right up the road so I take my solid waste bag directly to the transfer station but then I'm only emptying the C-Head every few weeks rather than every few days.

Many cat litters are made from a clay based material and any cat litter would be a problem if used in a Porta Pottie.   First, there is no need to put cat litter in a Porta Pottie.   Second, cat little would form a sludge in the potty holding tank that would be hard to empty out.   Third, the sludge would be the equivalent of dumping dirt into the dump point and likely to interfere with the sewage or septic system attached to the dump point.

I completely disagree.  I've used 'Happy Camper' odorless treatment for over 4 years and there is no chemical or toilet odor at all.  It is environmentally safe and can dissolve two ply tissue.  Check it out:  Happy Camper odorless treatment

I watched a YT video yesterday about a woman living in a tiny house she built that had a composting toilet; she said she called the city about how/where to dispose of her "solids" since her landlord/land owner wasn't thrilled/educated about humanure disposal. She was told to just put it in with the rest of her trash for pickup each week because they were accustomed to dealing with diapers/animal waste (carcasses)/etc.

Sorry if im hijacking this thread but i think its relevent to the original question. How do you store the bags with the bag/bucket method if you cant dump for a week or two?im thinking of a situation where your allowed to stay for 14 days and maybe the privacy isnt there for a cat hole and you want to stay there the whole time.

I have a gamma seal lid on my bucket.  The bags of crap are tied off and kept in the bucket; no smell in the camper.  The bucket has pine needles in the bottom for cover scent and I do not urinate in the poo bag (the key to smell reduction).  Cedar or pine sawdust in the bags to catch any 'leaks'.  I've had 14+ days 'supply' a number of times without smell, except for a slight smell while the bucket is open.
