Where can I buy a used smartphone

Every time I ask Verizon where do old smartphones go I get some mumbled answers that don't make any sense to me. So I went online and bought what was supposed to be one but what I got instead was a new Chinese piece of nothing good, poor quality phone, everyone I called complained about an annoying echo.

All of these older model smartphones that get turned in and replaced by a newer model must go 'somewhere' to be sold again. I need to know where that 'somewhere' is. Does anyone know where that would be? I really don't want a repeat of my last attempt.

Amazon has a good selection of used ones.

You may find them sold as "refurbished" rather than used. The freedompop offer I posted on earlier was for "refurbished" CDMA/4gLTE phones. (sprint and verizon use CDMA for 3g, AT&T and Tmobile use GSM.)

I was going to suggest Amazon, too. They also have Amazon's "Warehouse" where you can get some closeouts and I think refurbished.

I met a Guy a few years back who worked for AT&T.  He was explaining to me to dig through the Site and find
a section of used & refurbished phones.  

There are a lot of older types of phones that didn't sell being purchased by these Street Display Pavilions advertising free Cell's.  (if the person is on welfare/food stamps/or below certain provable income they get a
free Cell and 200 minutes a month free.)  Something to do with a Government plan to assist those in their job
search.  They tell you that they can't assure you what phone you'll get among the regular Cells and if you want to upgrade to an android touch screen/smart phone....there is a small fee. ($20 or something like that)
With these there is a certain amount of internet band width. 

But programs like these are buying refurbished Cells and lots of them from what I hear. 

I'm sure a lot of them go offshore too.

On another message board I'm on one Guy in Canada was asking "how long do your Tech Devices (Cells etc) last before they begin to corrupt and  become useless ?

I've bought quality refurbished phones from Verizon and off ebay. I've had my current refurbished iphone 5s, purchased at Verizon, for over 2 years. You can look online and see what they have available http://www.verizonwireless.com/devices/certified-pre-owned/

Verizon's are sold with a 2 year contract.

If you get an unlocked phone from ebay there is no contract

You guys are the best. Thank you so much for your suggestions. You even figured out that I was thinking refurbish while saying used. I thought only my husband after years of practice could do that. I fell better about looking online again.

Best Buy had new MotoG phones for only $25 recently. Those are good smartphones, especially at that price. My old phone was having glitches so I upgraded to one of those. I'm very happy with it!

Best Buy has had prepaid verizon 3g only smart phones for $15 on and off for the past few months. (buy online for store pickup.) I considered getting one just for 911 calls if needed. Any cell phone that can connect to it's network can call 911, even if there are no minutes available, expired contract, unpaid prepaid, etc.

Craigslist has a section for cell phones! There usually a ton and a wide range of conditions and models.
