Seems like a pretty nice family has won half that lottery and will take home something like 200mil before the man takes his cut. Thats some pretty insane amount of money, you could probably give everyone you knew personally enough to set them for life and not even feel it.

I thought it would be interesting to hear what vandwellers would do if they won that kind of money, given the mindset of simplifying our lives and the fact vandwellers are accustomed to small living.

I think I'd spend a couple years in a sweet rv traveling the US still. Then take my act out to the rest of the world. Im really not interested in a big house, tho land is something I would be interested in for myself and my family.

I was thinking it would be cool to set up a business of small hotels run by my family, Ive worked at a motel and its a pretty profitable business. I'd like to see a chain that really focuses on customer service like the old days or the really swank hotels, but priced reasonably. I basically like a way for future gen of my family to be set.

I'd also thought of setting up something like KOA campgrounds across the country but make them non-profit, and put some of them in places where its especially hard to find places to camp/park. After operating expenses, any profit would go into planting another one.

So, what would you do or not do with such a crazy windfall?

Well, the one thing I certainly would not do is ever work again.. ever, in any way shape or form!

I'd probably even have someone to scrub my back in the shower, since lifting the sponge is so strenuous.

Edit: I forgot to mention: According to my mother I would become a horrible person if I ever got rich. I think she is correct. For this reason I prefer to remain impoverished.

I never considered hiring someone to wash my back. French maid outfits optional? Hmm...I think I'd do more good than bad with it myself. Im sure even the most well meaning folks would slip up along the line but hey, life is a balance.

I think i agree on the work thing

100 million

The rest I would use to start a Property Management Business and buy more rental properties... and some new curtains for my camper... and... the trailer I want to build my travel trailer on! LOL... honestly, that is exactly what I would do with my part!

This is fun!

I'd probably pay someone to do some of the things need doing on the RV instead of doing them myself. Eventually put up a yurt somewhere capable of being lived in a while and have someone get into where the water damaged structural members are on the coach and replace them. Buy a spanking new rim for my dual rear end spare instead of running around looking for a cheap used one.

But right now might be the best it gets, and it's pretty good.

I don't think I'd change my life much.. I'd probably change my job to 1/2 time instead of full time. I love my job, but It gets in the way of traveling, or enjoying nature sometimes.. If it was half-time, it would be about perfect.

I'd pay off all the rest of my debt.

I'd get health insurance, maybe instead, I'd hire a doctor full-time, and have them travel around and fix people up, and fix me up when I'm broken. I wouldn't need them all the time, so might as well have them be super useful and do free clinic's around the country or something. Not entirely sure, but I'm sure after talking with some doctors we could work something out that would be great.

I'd put the rest in savings, and just let it collect more. I'd do donations to various groups I think are doing great things, but only on the interest money, I wouldn't touch the rest of the principal.

I wouldn't want to setup trust funds or whatever for the people I love, care for, not even the kids. I would make sure they continue to have whatever they need, but I already do that, it wouldn't change that, but I want them to make something of their lives for themselves, and giving them a pile of money generally only makes MORE problems, not less.

I'd probably invest in unimproved land, and put the land in a trust (probably partner with one that already exists) to keep it unimproved and allow people to visit, camp, on, etc I don't think I'd allow hunting with guns tho (other types of hunting would be ok, bow and arrow, traps, etc) why? I absolutely HATE seeing shotgun shell casings every where in nature. UGH, it just upsets me terribly.

With Love,
Tara

I agree about the just handing them money. Altho as a lotto winner it might be hypocritical I was thinking it be better to set them up with their own business to manage, so they'd be making their own money with startup, salary and some help here and there from me.

Interesting topic!!

Not that I ever buy a ticket... but when I see the ads, I think of what I would do.

1. Pay off the children's mortgages.
2. Put aside a little for my aged care.
3. Donate the rest to Doctors Without Borders.

There's no way I want the burden of having that much money to worry about.

Lifey

Ohh I like that Lifey...me too....but I might add a Tiger Provan..hehe

http://www.tigervehicles.com/

And my wife and I always say we will split the winnings for each to do what they want with the $...

Bri

I would pay off my sisters mortgage build a cabin on my PA property, buy property in NC? somewhere warmish for the winter, but a truck and horse trailer with live in space. Hire 24 hour care for my Dad.

Then I would pay hospital bills for families with sick children, build affordable homes, and apartments. Do the secret Santa thing, Upgrade beds in many VA hospitals, build foster care facilities, Help children who "age out" of the foster care system go to college, get jobs find housing...

I need a lot more than 200 million I think.

Bodhi has the right idea...because my family is larger, I'd end up with less, but putting 5 million into a mutual fund and live off 5-10% of that per year, would be way more than enough...I think I would end up donating most of what was left after family to Children's hospitals, Cancer centers, many churches to support their missionaries. Then, I would donate my time to helping people rebuild after catastrophies.

One thing I'd like to do is to purchase bare land in several different areas of the US as Vandweller retreats where they can park for a spell. They'd be in places where people are not allowed to legally park overnight. Places where there is little BLM land.

All I know, that most of what I got would be shared with many. To keep it would corrupt the person inside me. I might learn to love money like the other people in the world who destroy others to make more of what they love--money. You can't take it with you when you go, but you can sure leave a legacy by giving it away to better the lives of others.

Rae

I like the idea of the vandweller havens in tough to park places. Especially out east, where there seems to be less free camping.
