What do you carry water in?

I know of people who use the 1 gallon bottles and just refill them. I have a 6 and 7 gallon refillable. These are heavy when full. I have seen 2 1/2 gal on up. I have 16 inches clearance under my bed and would like to be able to store more than 30 gallons.

James AKA Lynx

You might look for ones made with BPA-free plastics. They cost more, of course, so it's a trade-off.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisphenol_A#Health_effects

For me, I want my drinking water to not taste like plastic.

One tip: rectangular jugs are more space efficient than cylindrical ones.

Google "waterbrick" I have them and they work great!

I have seen those they look pretty neat. little pricey though. highdesertranger

I use a 40 gallon tank and its mounted under my bed. I picked it up at http://www.pplmotorhomes.com/parts/rv-pumps-water/rv-water-tanks.htm Then hooked up to a pump and ran it to a spigot.

What vehicle, what year and where exactly is it mounted?

89 Dodge Van the tank is mounted between the rear wheel wells

Ah, okay. When I read "under my bed" my brain was thinking "under the truck bed/floor."

Om my 97 Dodge, I raised the bed 16" clearance above the floor board. I may put in a tank under the van. The gas tank on this modle is behind the axle.

James AKA Lynx

I got this from Industrial Plastics in Langley. It holds 5 gallons and is food grade. Cost something like $15 and is way better than the Coleman style crap out there, thicker walled and being clear, I can tell at a glance how much I have left. ..Willy.

willy how well does that spigot work when your jug is horizontal. the ones I had in the past that look similar to that one would drip slowly I would put a pot under it to catch the drips. like I said it was a very slow drip but when you are in the desert any waste of water is not good. highdesertranger

I actually prefer empty milk gallon jugs. I can collect as many as I can carry free of charge, and just put them anywhere I have extra space. Every time I think about setting up plumbing or a sink, I remember the KISS method. It's cheaper anyway and I can fill up a couple of jugs in a gas station sink without anyone giving a hoot.

that's true noah, but I found that miles and miles of washboard road tend to wear holes in them. I have even wore holes in beer cans on washboard roads and you can forget beer in bottles the caps come loose bye, bye beer. highdesertranger

" bye, bye beer"

Sounds like a nightmare...

Very good point though, I haven't had that experience. I'm not much of crazy offroader despite my overpriced all-terrain tires!

Never had any problems with the spigot leaking. If it WERE to leak, many stores out there have the spigots for Coleman units for sale separately. On the other hand, I believe that it's an NPT fitting, so I could go to a hardware store and pick up a brass tap, let's say, and screw 'er in. ..Willy.

it is a nightmare. my buddy who is a beer connoisseur spends the winter looking for beer he likes in cans because he was losing about 20% of bottles. for me not such a big deal I am not that picky. not to many craft beers in the small country stores I visit. highdesertranger

"the ones I had in the past that look similar to that one would drip slowly"

Piece of tubing held to spout with a hose clamp. End of tube folded over and held with a binder clip.

Or just use a cork.

I use the military surplus 5 gallon plastic jerry cans. They are taller and skinnier than most jugs, so they fit in some otherwise unusable spaces in my van.

They're not cheap, but are very heavy duty and last a very long time.

Here's a link, but they can be found for much less if you look.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Water-J...pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4d04036140
