Looking at different water containers. I have reliant 7 gal and was looking at one that was 100% high density, high molecular weight polyethylene. USDA and FDA Approved. Would this leave a bad taste in the water?

James AKA Lynx

Hi James
I am looking for water containers myself. I currently have recycled veggie oil containers ( 3.5 gal) that I got from a diner. boiled them out, and seem to work well for now, but am looking for other options possibly. May I ask why you are replacing the "reliant" brand ones, just curious!
                                                                                                           Randy

I was wanting something more durable and I found one that looks better. I have the 7 gal and was wanting a 5 gal of the same heigth. I only have 16 inches clearances and I wanted to have more than 25 gal's. Just looking at options and was hoping this would work out. Plus they are close by so no shipping.

James AKA Lynx

Great! Let us know how they work out.

I was wanting to know if polyethylene is OK for water and does not add taste. Does anybody know?

James AKA Lynx

I use vinegar every so often to freshen up my tanks. if I buy new and its plastic I do the vinegar thing too. it kills the plastic taste. I found lemon juice works too but it takes allot more. highdesertranger

FDA and USDA means they are food quality containers. All plastic leaches something into water, rated only means safe to ingest. The vinegar treatment will quickly remove the stuff that leaches from the plastic surface.
