My dream of RV living is traveling around more or less constantly, which is what my husband and I did when we full-timed in a motorhome for two years in the 1990's. The price of fuel makes this almost prohibitive now but the idea of parking somewhere in a van or MH for extended periods just leaves me cold.

How many of you are roaming vs. staying put?

I'm not a full-timer yet but I've considered the issue of the cost of gas when I do become a full-time van dweller.

I'll be 56 years old when I go full-time so I'll have to work at least part-time to pay my monthly bills. I can't totally drop out of the work force. That will mean to some degree I'll have to work and commute in my van. If I can get hired at a part or full time job I'll have to commute in my van. I'll most likely be bringing a bicycle with me as well. Just so I can keep an eye on my mobile "home" while I'm working will give me piece of mind.

I'm going to try and find place not too far away from when I'm not working. The cost of gas, being what it is, as you mentioned is one of our largest expenses as van dwellers. I'm going to try and drive as little as possible. But I'm not going to let that one issue prevent me from driving when it's necessary to do so.

I'm not totally comfortable with parking my van and leaving it for an extended period of time while I'm at work. I'm going to try to keep it a reasonable distance from where I'll be working. As I mentioned earlier, I'll most likely be bringing a bicycle with me as well for non-essential trips to save some gas. Every little bit helps!

i will someday have a summer and a winter location ....

maybe this could expand to four locations like the best of four seasons ....

i have now changed to pulling a cargo trailer, with motorcycle and supplies inside, so i can get around at fixed locations at 60mpg instead of 10mpg ....

i think that the only solution for me is to win the lotto ....

blkjak ....

That's my solution right there. Do like the native tribes used to do. Although I plan on making short bunny hops from month to month in a region during seasons. You know, to break up the monotony and for a change of scenery.

That's something I'd like to do as well once I'm used to being a full-timer. It's not so much for me but for the cat(s) I'll have traveling with me. I want to stay in a part of the country where there isn't a weather extreme. I grew up in New England so I'm not too fond of snow. After living in Las Vegas I've become less then thrilled with living in 100+ temps in the summer. I'd love to find a great part of the country where they have a nice climate most of the year at first.

Through the comments from members here and my own experiences traveling I'll decide when & where I'll be spending my time. That will come with experience on the road.

blkjak.... if you win the lotto you best remember your friends LOL

I plan on traveling as much as I can but will spend time up here around family about half the year. HuggZ

We travel very slowly, keeping our average about fifty miles a day. Our gas mileage is bad at just a little over 9 MPG so it still adds up to at least $600.00 a month. We rarely stay in campgrounds and that saves us a lot of money however finding free places to stay especially in the east is tough so we often end up at Walmart or some other big box store. Since we spend the day out doing things or sightseeing Walmart "camping" isn't as bad as it sounds.

For about 2 years I won't have that problem of gas because of job camping. I will suffer the heat and freeze my tush off in the winter. LOL In the comfort of my tin can home. Not really because I have ways to cool and be warm. The 10 below sleeping bag should be almost here.

Mortisha ....

if i win the lotto i will buy a place in east tn mountains, build a "club house", and bunch of free "RV" hookups ....

blkjak ....

I'd like to visit, if you do! Some of my ancestors are from the Flag Pond, TN, area and I've never been there.

I've given some serious thought to buying some undeveloped land to start my homesteading project. As to where I'm not totally certain yet. But I'm going to start taking notes as I wander the country.

Lately I find myself searching for land that's not too expensive to buy and develop as my future homesteading home. They are out there but it takes a little bit of searching on your part.
