There is a growing trend with full time RVers downsizing to a bicycles. Experts appoint it to to the growing Class of extreme frugalists in society.

RVers are trading their huge rigs for bicycles and panniers, seeing that they can get the best parts of backpacking and cycling.

"I've had a bicycle for outdoor rides and this RV solution has been right in plain sight for decades. With the money im saving by living out a bicycle I can travel the world, and take my bicycle along!" Joe, a 32 year old ex-RV dweller says.

The RV industry is sweating bullets as dealers & shops across America see sharp drops in revenue. The fact that thousands of used RVs are flooding the market, making it hard for new converts to sell their rigs. Meanwhile  bicycle, pedicab & bike trailer manufacturers see sales soaring, and custom bike fabricators are swamped with orders as some use their RV sale proceeds to have custom bicycle campers made.

Those deliberating taking the plunge are testing the water in various ways. Some lock themselves out of their rigs for days at a time, others just leave their rigs behind on weekend moves. While a few create detailed spreadsheets & perform comprehensive cost benefit analysis for living out of a bicycle.

Evangelical supporters of this lifestyle twist have already coined names for it.  Bikepacking & cycledweller have made make words for this new lifestyle.

Kris Hernandez says to prospective Bikepackers to Just do it. Kris traded his RV for a bicycle a year ago, and although he's a super mooch, Is considered a pioneer to cycledwelling. "Everybody should live out of a bike, it'll transform the economy!"

Kris ends his interview with" Full time RVing can cost too much money, cycledwell instead!"

hum that's funny. I was watching a financial news channel last week the CEO of one of the nations largest RV manufacturers was on. I believe it was Fleetwood and they were talking about record profits and record sales their stock was going way up. didn't seem like he was sweating bullets. highdesertranger

I wouldn't wanna live off a bike. which mcds would you go to when it rains?

I will definitely not be part of that growing trend. Trying to decide on a bigger van or adding a cargo trailer now. Aside from the fact I am in a bigger hurry to get from point A to point B than travelling on a bike.

I used to be an avid cyclist, and have been threatening to get back into it. Also thought about Bikepacking. This concept is not new to me.
Thinking about this, I still think it would be fun to go on limited Bikepacking adventures. Not sure I would want to live off a bike though.
I think I will incorporate my cycling with my vanning.

REI is doing free classes on BikePacking and a wide variety of other classes for those who spend time in nature. Their "Garage Sales" are events where you can really score great deals.

Hubby has bike toured (I guess it's more glamorous to say "bikepacking" now) since the early 80's, all over the US and Europe, including the TransAm. He's still riding, albeit multi-day rides instead of months-long tours. His body parts are still up to it, but I'm not interested in bike touring and sagging is a boring pain for me.

Minimalism is great, but as we've gotten older, compromise is the name of the game. He's tired of sleeping on the ground. We've been tenting for the last 15 years and I'm tired of sleeping on the ground, too. He has friends in their 60s still touring, but none of them longer than a few days at a time now. Living with panniers and a tent and sleeping bag strapped on to your bike is simple. Sometimes simply awful with any number of conditions, be it weather, people or other factors. It is sure nice to have a bed off the ground and a solid roof overhead.

Hub believes long term bike touring is for the younger. Or maybe, just no longer for him.

Every time I decide to "just do it" I end up biting off more than I can chew. Even so, downsizing to a bicycle appeals to me. Now to figure out whether I can practically downsize to a bicycle and keep my canine travel buddy! :)

*begins daydreaming about bicycling to South America with my dog....

I can't seem to find this information online. I've searched by people's names and some of the text in the original post but no luck.

Help? :)

This sounds  like an Onion article.  Original intentional fake news that is usually a funny twist to real events.

A Google search for Kris Hernandez and bikepacking returns only one result: this thread.

Well, the name of this forum is "Cheap RV Living," and a Bicycle is considered about the cheapest RV (recreational vehicle) you can get. :D

Well, assuming that a person currently living in an RV intends to continue living a mobile lifestyle even while downsizing to a bicycle, it's got everything to do with RV living. And I quote: (bold emphasis is mine)

Vision Statement

Hi, my name is Bob Wells and I’m the owner of the site and forum. I post as “akrvbob”. ... This is my vision for us:

1) To teach people (especially people in need) how to be reasonably comfortable living in their car, van or RV.
2) To inspire others to follow their dreams and live mobile. We’re specifically oriented towards living cheaply and most often in vans, but all are welcome. Vandwelling is an attitude and not a choice of vehicle or residence.
3) To create a tribal community of like-minded people to support and care for each other.

So, yeah... it's like that :)
