I had an odd idea this morning.

H&R Block and that other company - Jackson Hewett? - hire a lot of temporary help during tax season.  They both also offer training in tax preparation, although it looks like it's not free.

I was wondering if it would be possible to make enough working as a tax preparer for 3 or 4 months to finance your travels for the rest of the year?

Of course, sitting at a desk doing taxes all day isn't for everybody, but I gotta think it's better than 10 hour shifts on the floor of an Amazon warehouse.

And there are H&R Blocks and Jackson Hewetts all over the country.  You could set up camp anywhere along the Gulf Coast and spend a pleasant few months beachcombing in your spare time during tax season.  Or, I'm guessing that once you're in the system, and have a few references from one or more locations, you could probably get work anywhere you happened to be when tax season rolled around.  You might even be able to work as an independent someplace like Quartzite.

I know we're a ways away from tax season, but this might be prime time to get the training if you decide you're interested.

Of course, this is all just speculation on my part.

So, anyone here done any of this tax preparation?  Any comments from someone with practical experience at this?

Regards
John

I don't know the situation today, but I had a friend that took an H&R Block job after the company he was working for shut down. It was minimum wage. This was around 30 years ago.

I've wondered about that, too. Around here we have Liberty Tax Service and they advertise FREE tax preparer classes. They are 10 weeks long and you only pay for your books (however much that is). The classes start in September, so perfect timing on your post!

Lots of not so happy people on the internet complaining about big company games around the tax classes offered and the subsequent employment they do (or don't) provide.

you could also do it yourself, the software these preparers are trained in is basically the same as taxact, quicktax etc. ive done taxes for my coworkers and friends, and some offered me cash. the fees hnr charge for it are crazy, and its all the same e file. Only difference is the loan on your refund deal which they steer you from more now (wont even do it unless you get a lot back).

i know someone who did jacson h. ill ask what the numbers were.

She replied thus:
Free tax class. Back then I was paid hourly. At the end of the season, you'll get a bonus check. You get money for each return. It was a few hundred bucks.

I hated it. I was amazing at it, but absolutely hated it. Can't stand desk job

so good for a few bucks probably
