it's the way the lip on the lid and box fit together. for the most part rain comes down at 90-180° to the ground. the lip keeps the water out because the rain would have to hit the action packer and travel up the side against gravity and then push in. however the lip is not a tight seal at all and dust readily finds it way in. in copious amounts I might add. highdesertranger

I've had this Contico Tuff Bin on the back of my van for 4 years. It's made from very heavy structural plastic and is cavernous, with a 50+ gallon capacity. It's been incredibly durable and I've never had water or dust inside the box. I run a strap over the top to secure it to my rack which holds the lid extra-tight and probably helps with dust. The lid and the base have overlapping lips of about 2 inches. It has a locking latch plus provision for 2 padlocks.

I bought mine in-stock from Menards. I've seen them in stock at larger Walmarts. Google "Contico Tuffbin Pro" and find it at other stores. Usually about $60.

Here's a couple sample links for the box:

I have a swing out hitch rack on my E150 and agonized over the same issue. I bought a cedar chest off CL for $30 that fit perfectly in the rack rails. The next agony was drilling a couple holes in the bottom of a perfectly gorgeous cedar chest to run bolts through the expanded metal rack. Then I had to drill bolt holes in the lid for the lock hasp. Still, I'm pretty happy with the results. Now I have to swing all this out and away from.the back doors to access them and the weak hinge would never hold up so I welded 6 inch pipe segment in the corners to insert 2 foot sliding dowl pieces as supports but as luck would have it the girl friend had some light weight jack stands in the shed and they work better than my idea ever would have. $90 for the rack and $30 for the chest.

The box doesn't need to be water proof or dust proof if the contents don't need to be kept dry or clean. Items that do need to be kept dry/clean can be in various containers inside the outer box. And the outer box can have drainage holes.

Hey! Where can I get a driveway carrier for the bavk? Thanks. HoboJoe
Sorry. What I meant to ask is where can I get a swing away carrier for the back. HJ

Try JC Whitney on line. I wish I had ever dollar I spent with them over the last sixty years. Some of their stuff is very good but their tools were like Harbor Freight before there was a Harbor Freight.

I like the storage box ideas, but I am wondering (worrying) about the storage assembly covering up
the rear license plate (as located on my Suburban). Has anyone had any issues with police
questioning/ticketing over the plate obstruction? Presently I just haul fairly flat stuff on my cheap Harbor Freight
fixed cargo carrier but would like to use it for my generator which would obscure the rear plate. Thanks T

Put a license plate holder and license plate light on the back and move your plate. Hookup to your existing trailer light plug. You won't have any worries. The bracket and light should be available at your auto parts store.

Nice - but the price. I am a nomad by choice not by necessity but that price is out there. I am going to a 4 x 4 trailer the will haul my tricycle and some extras - said the old man who can't balance a bicycle anymore. My problem is that most small trailers are 12 inch wheels and I want something larger so I'll have to buy the trailer and then the wheels driving the price up. oops guess I am going off topic here but I think a small trailer might be as good or better than a swing out????? for the price???

Be careful of a trailer with a short tongue to trailer wheel distance as it will jackknife really fast. I stopped dragging my motorcycle trailer and pulling a toad as it was a PITA.

My plate sits sandwiched between the glass and the 1/2" foam board insulation that covers the right rear window.

It was a handy place to put it while hauling a motorcycle on a carrier.

Technically it would be illegal at night because it wouldn't be lighted. Only about 5% of my driving has been at night though, so no tickets. Yet.

This would be a good idea, but my back widow is tinted basically black and I use reflectix panels a lot of the time.
I thought about just mounting it on my cargo rack but I only use it hit and miss --so I just take my chances and
will hope for a warning. thanks.

Did you list CRV in there? Is there a reason you don’t want something on top? I am beyond happy with my locking Thule cargo box. Expensive but worth it on top of my CRV.

Since I had some scrap plywood and some free paint, I decided to build my own. It measures about 20H x 22D x 42W and holds a lot of stuff.

Hey thanks. There was another thread about storing portable panels and that got me thinking about where in my already crowded van I would put one.  So that's why I decided to go large.
