Hello there!

So, A bit about me.  Hmm...always a hard one to answer.

I currently work at a homeless shelter (where I have been working for over 5 years) that up until about three years ago I was staying at.  I am currently in sticks and bricks but hope that by this time next year I will be free.

Hello and welcome to the CRVL forums, Mark! This is a great place to get inspired and figure things out

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

Welcome to the CRVL  Forums   :)

Let me say thanks for the work you've done with the homeless.   I know it is a thankless job from people I've known in the past who do that work at City Missions and Shelters for Homeless Vets.  I've worked to assist them with websites and grants writing.   I'm sure working with the homeless will be a great asset to you with regards to understanding the thinking that delivers some to that facility and keeps them there and the others who learn ways to get out and on their feet again.  Learning to make good choices and to better deal with circumstances.

As for your dream of getting free,  let me invite you to view my websites below.  You may get some ideas from it that could assist you in being free to work/travel and be able to have a more enjoyable life.

A lot of people start out with as good a Van as they can afford. Often used white fleet Vans like the Power Company, Phone Company etc use and sell when they are about 4 to 5 years old. (after their accountants have written them of)  You may find them for two to four thousand dollars.  Then finish out the inside as shown in the sites below.

The bottom site is a portal of items and links that will help you to learn to travel and see things,  find places to stay (free) and Gym's to belong to where you can go relax for a few hours at any time of day or week.  Thus you can get fixed up for the road, and then learn how use what is out there on the road to create your nomadic lifestyle.

And look for a copy of Bob Well's book. Read it through the winter months and learn what it teaches you. I got my Library to buy a copy and people are checking it out now.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!

Welcome, Mark,
Sounds like you are ready to see some new sites...you can probably use the stress relief most nomadic folks find when they can be free on the road or in the boonies. I guess your past experience has given you lots of insights on "minimalist living."

Look forward to your comments and questions on other threads too.

Thanks, everybody!

To be honest, don't believe all the hype from Hollywood and the media about homeless people.  Contrary to what they would have you believe, most are not junked out alcoholics that don't care to work or have their own place. If anyone is interested in watching it, here is a link to a video I made regarding homelessness.  It isn't very professionally made and the study it cites is a few years old, but it gives you an idea of homelessness.

The last few pics (the ones of the apartment) are the apartment I moved into when I moved out of the shelter.  That particular building got sold so I had to move into another place (which is a shame as I really liked the built-in bookcase).

Mark,
That was a very well done video with lots of good information. Quite inspiring, too. I have another load of pretty nice things from my mom's house to donate and, in your honor, will take them to the Salvation Army thrift shop here instead of Goodwill.

I'm so glad you found the help you needed. I can certainly understand depression taking over with hard circumstances.

Well, the depression had quite a bit to do with getting downsized again, and again, and again. Looking for a new job every couple of years got REALLY old. I might one day put my story out there on a blog or whatever.
