http://rattlesnakevaccinefordogs.com/index.html

I picked up feed at my local Tractor Supply Center and took a flyer about their pet shot clinic. Reading the services offered I saw Rattlesnake vaccine for dogs, price is 19 dollars, you need 2 vaccines 30 days apart. I had never heard of this. I did a little research and think I will probably do this for my little girls before moving on down the trail. Where I live there is no danger. A few hours south there are rattlers and copperheads. I couldn't find out if it works for copperheads.
You still must get your dog to a vet if bitten. It looks like this gives you some time to work with.

Of course there are cons to the vaccine. http://www.dogsadversereactions.com/vaccinesurvivors9.html

I will look up more recent research before I do this.

I chose not to get the rattlesnake vaccine, for Stumpy. Like the lyme vaccine and some of the others it has no real history of effectiveness. At best, it gives you a half an hour to 45 minutes to get your dog to the vet. Currently, I am an hour from any medical services and I imagine the same will hold true when I am fulltiming (in less than a month! YIPEEEEE!!!) In the southwest there are seminars offered for snake deterrent. An e-collar is used to teach the dogs ALL snakes are bad. IMO/E, this is a much more effective way to save your dog from snake bites of any kind.

yes wait for more history on this. I got the lyme vaccine for myself, first two shots - in a three shot requirement. then they ended the availability. was not as effective as they thought. problem is it now makes it hard to tell if I have lyme disease, as the tests will all show positive, even if I do not have it.

sure there are other issues with the rattlesnake vaccine. will bear bells scare away snakes?

I have read about the vaccine, and have heard horror stories about dogs having seizures after this stuff, although I'm not sure if there's different types on the market now? Candy my dog was bitten 2 years ago in Lake Havasu City she wasn't treated for over 10 hours. She came back to the Turtle at about 7pm and I noticed nothing wrong with her, until I woke up at 5am, and her head was swelled up like a balloon! So it was then I rushed her to the vet at 5am sunday morning. EDIT Theres also Rattlesnake avoidance classes.

3 days after the bite

Wow Hobo, you were really lucky. Do you suppose the treatment that long afterward really did any good? My little Cricket is so little that she is more likely to be food.

Our pets are nothing more than guinea pig fodder for pharmaceutical companies, ever since I joined the rabies challenge fund and had them open my eyes to the dangers of over vaccination of our pets I would be weary of any untested vaccine and to test it I would be affraid of how many critters would have to be used to make such a study.

http://www.rabieschallengefund.org/

Not sure if it would have made a difference at that point or not, but I wasnt gonna risk it. My Mothers neighbor has a lil dog that was bit they didnt notice it for quite sometime. He came out of it just fine. Depends alot on where on the body they are bitten.

i agree with cyndi i have done this myself with nonvenomous snakes of course. it works but dogs still stick their noses were they don't belong. i have heard bad things about the vaccine too. my vet being one that said don't vaccinate. highdesertranger

There are a bunch of different kinds of rattle snakes. i don't know any dog that has survived the bite of a mohave green. But I know plenty, including the tiniest chihuahua I have ever seen, that survived a coon tail's bite.

I would like to chime in quickly on this.

When I worked as a vet tech, I witnessed some wicked scary reactions to over-vaccinating and unnecessary vaccinating, especially in small to medium dog breeds. Stuff like developing allergies, tumors and seizures were mostly what I saw.

Now, don't get me wrong, I believe in vaccinating for parvo, distemper, rabies, adenovirus and parainfluenza (the common combo shot) but other vaccines such as lyme have yet to be deemed effective and are discouraged by many veterinarians. Many vets are switching from yearly combination vaccinations to a 3 year vaccine to help reduce side-effects, but this is for adult animals with healthy, fully-developed immune systems.

Anyway, I would recommend talking to a vet about it and considering the risk factors of exposure for your furry friend.
