The next step up from compact car camping/dwelling is not a car + trailer, it is a minivan.

From the perspective of fuel economy, ease of driving, safety, ability on narrow two track roads, long distance travel and living space, a minivan beats a car + trailer.

The car + trailer is good when you usually use the car by itself and occasionally hitch up the trailer for short to moderate distances.

I always thought the modern minivan manufacturers should have taken a lesson from the old gear reduction box, heavy duty suspension and brakes VW buses that were rated as 1 ton trucks! Very slow one ton trucks! Lol!!!

I absolutely agree with you. Unfortunately I'll be making payments for this car for the next 3-6 years.

I've been looking into Foam Teardrop campers at someone else's suggestion and looks like I should be able to keep the build weight anywhere from 400 to 600 pounds. I'll be researching weight of build material soon; such as wood, foam, weight of sealants used, etc.

I'm sure you can make it work, especially boondocking in an area without a lot of people.

If you add a screen tent and a shower tent, you can live well camping out of a car or teardrop. The car or teardrop serves as your bedroom, the screen tent as your kitchen and living room, the shower tent as your clothes changing room/washroom/outhouse.

Note that you don't need a teardrop, just set up a bed in your car for this method.
