Excuse me, but the inventor of Duct Tape was a WOMAN! Her name was Vesta Stoudt, of Amboy, IL.
She did not actually invent it. She just wrote a letter to the president of the USA complaining about the tape the military was using. The president then contacted the company Jonson and Johnson and sent them a copy of her letter. Their engineering division then began the process of designing and testing a new suitable for the purpose adhesive tape product.

Wtritting a complaint letter about a pre existing tape is not even close to being the same thing as inventing a new tape product that became known as duct tape.

Lots of women are inventors and product engineers but Vesta Stoudt is not one of them. However she was an effective complainer meaning she was a catalyst that started a process. She took the time to write a letter to her top level boss person who was head of the US Army she was working for.

Sorry, but I have to go with BelgianPup on this one.

Even the Johnson and Johnson website credits her with its invention.

https://www.jnj.com/our-heritage/ve...invented,Ordnance Plant near Amboy, Illinois.

All she did was suggest using a strong cloth tape instead of a paper tape. See attachment for a printed version of her her hand written letter.

Suggesting cloth was good but she was not involved in actually creating the adhesive which is the essential component that creates the strong grip and waterproof component, could be torn by hand. Without that formula invented in the labs at Jonson and Jonson previously existing cloth tapes of that era would not have worked.

Inspiration yes, inventor no.

Here is a link where the patent organization explains the difference between an idea and an invention.
https://patentfile.org/an-invention-vs-an-idea-theyre-not-the-same/
Vesta Stoudt had an idea to try cloth tape instead of paper so she scrounged up some cloth tape and tried it to see if it did not tear when wet. That is not invention, that is an idea. Jonson and Johnson took the idea but they had already been making cloth tapes that had adhesives. They got to working inventing a new adhesive, researched the type of cloth needed and of course all the characteristic that would be required for the application and filed a patent because they actually are inventors, Vesta had a need and an idea. But she never did any work on the actual product.

Why am I fussy and sure of which is which? Up to the day I went on the road full time for the previous 20 years I worked for and lived in the workshop space of an actual real life inventor. His name is on a great many patents. Among his clients are IBM, Boeing, Hewlitt Packard and products used with Onan Generators. He gets royalty checks every month for the Onan project. He and a group of associates created the smart controllers used in high end Motorhomes for turning the generator s on and off as needed so among other things they do not violate quiet hours.

He explained to me 22 years ago the difference between an idea and an invention. He is the real deal and still working full time at 80 years old and has several recent patents on components created for customers who had ideas but were not inventors. Now they have great products that function just right.

Giving away secrets here, school bus supply companies have a “seat tape” which is cloth with adhesive that will stick to itself so well it is almost impossible to get apart. It is more flexible and thinner than Gorilla tape but thicker than duct tape. It is fairly wide like 3” and comes in dark green, brown and blue if I remember correctly. Holed ( about 1” in diameter) an oil pan once, cleaned with spray Gumout, put some chewing gum in the center of a 4” piece of tape to fill the hole ) and cris crossed two pieces of tape over it. Never leaked in years of driving. Expensive but best stuff ever for emergency repairs.

The original name from Jonson and Johnson was Duck tape not Duct tape, the name Duck was from Duck Cloth. Duck cloth was the name of the type of fabric used to make it. Could be ducks invented it, they did invent duck down feathers, duck calls and even the word “Duck” so that humans do not get hit in the head by flying ducks.

New chemical adhesive formulas, coatings, processes and types of fabrics can mean new patents.

“The more things change the less they stay the same”.

Ducks eat baby bullfrogs!

It’s a fake! Can’t possibly be the original Duck Tape! False advertising! The original stuff was sold on contract to the army and was specified to be colored army green to blend in with the objects it was used on.
