Gunny: "Has anyone ever just checked their bank account in the hopes that they posted a direct deposit early?"

Early? EARLY? Jeeez, Rob, they're all hoping to receive notice that we've DIED before the deposit hits the bank!

I try not to but I get teased because the phone recording will tell me it's pending a few days before it's truly there.

I heard that they will want a refund if you go and die !
Funny cuz they wait a month before sending that first check.
Birthday in March and first check was May.....

I'm sure that if I owe them any when I croak they will take it from my insurance payment to my kids. They'll get theirs one way or the other.

Rob

That's the pits to have a repair like that and fail without making it home. Plus paying for it too! I recently replaced my serpentine belt and idler so I wouldn't have to deal with that. Never know though.
Any update on what could have caused that?

Believe it or not I was going over my bank statement a while back and noticed a government check deposit a couple hours before midnight. I don't think it has happened since though.

Ya know Rob....

We all like meeting each other. You don't have to have accidents and break downs, we can just have get togethers. :p

I take it we are talking Social Security?
They used to pay in advance, but then people would pass away, so it was hard to repo the money.
That is why they now pay a month late. If you kick, your estate don't owe them money.

Their rules make no sense to me either.  They advertise that you can retire early at 62. Not true. You have to be 62 for a month before your clock starts, then they pay you a month late. So you can retire at 62 and one month. My Bday is at the end of October. I got one payment for last year.

Social Security does pay a month late. The VA does not. Die 30 minutes before the month is up and they want a refund.

Obviously I won't be in a position to care but my Executor will have to settle before dividing up the insurance and personal property.

I don't think they come and repo the scooter, but who knows?

Rob

Dang Rob, I'm also sorry to hear of your troubles. But as usual, I'm glad you found us as your endeavors are entertaining and educational. As I'm sure you know, You gotta be tough to do this stuff. If it were easy, lots of us would do something else.

Please do let us know why the new belt went UA. I was glad to hear the first mech installed a new tensioner with the belt.
Likely a water pump, alternator or AC unit that froze up.

Gunny, the girl whose pigtails I yanked on was the girl I liked. Maybe the Uni is trying to flirt with you?

No call from my mechanic today but I told him no rush, needed the retirement check to pay for it. I never let it get hot and it cranked up fine to load on the wrecker.

I should have looked at what was broken when I got home but I was past the point of caring.

I should have paid closer attention when my Dad was trying to get me interested in mechanics. Funny how smart he was back then.

Now if I can find a body man who works cheap I'll be set.

Rob

My dad didn't want to teach me
sorry, you're working on the car and you're DADDY! I must be where you are, teach me or I r in ur way
LOL
Only Uncle Jack could lure me away from Dad

My Dad was 'The Strong Silent Type', a man of few words and his word was gospel.

He was a Storekeeper on supply ships in WW 2, he had 2 ships hit by torpedoes while he was below deck. Rescued from the drink on the first, limped into port in the second. Never told his story. My aunt told us.

If I could be half the man my Dad was I would be happy.

My dad died 3.5 weeks into the month, they yanked his retirement check out of their joint account so fast it made my moms head spin.  Especially since part of it was hers, he paid into the program where she got something like 50% of his check when he died... took forever to get that part back.  And tell your executor to plan on a minimum 120 minute wait time with the VA when calling about a death.

The only thing I will need from the VA is authorization (Death Certificate and DD214) so my urn can be placed in DFW National Cemetery. I am hoping I get a spot with a view. you can't reserve a spot,

Cremation is paid for, Patriot Guards will give me a 10 rider escort And the Marine Detachment will play Taps. No fuss, No muss.

Cat is taken care of and all my small stuff will be given to any kin that wants them.

My Executor is a retired US Marshall and my best friend. I am in good hands.

Rob

Huh, my old man got burial in San Antonio, with taps and 21 gun salute
I paid for the casket, and the transport, the AF paid for the service, and the flag
One day I want to get a scrap of 'class A' material to mount his medals on, for a shadow box

No 'Service' for me, 21 guns, Taps and 1 round at the bar later. My son has my medals. The one round is 'on me' .

Rob

I heard the Air Force was stopping the 21 gun salute. http://wkrn.com/2015/12/15/21-gun-s...ce-funerals-due-to-lack-of-funding-personnel/

I never understood it anyway, but then I never was into symbolism. All kinda seems like a ruse to me, the whole thing about the flag on the coffin etc. What was that supposed to do for the dead or the living? Poor people fighting for the interests of the wealthy.

I am a Vet, but I went the Neptune Society route. If I had last words to write it might be, glad all that shit is over with.

This is what I was thinking, and definitely would have caused the belt malfunction. Barring one of those, a Serpentine belt is usually pretty bullet proof.
