I used to live in up above Cool back in the 90s. Beautiful area. I commuted to Folsom each day from there. It does rain pretty good once you get up in those trees of the Sierras (when it does do it).

I've discovered first hand, how beneficial it could be to have a roof-mounted panel in addition to my suitcase solar.  While parked in my friend's driveway, and desperately in need of solar charging, it has taken me 3 hours of constantly moving my panel to finally achieve enough sunlight to get 13.1v, 5.5 amps from the panel.  And, as the sun keeps moving, I will have to, as well.  The roof of my rv is always in the sun the way the trees and shrubs are located, where the ground is not.  Sure, I could find a way to get this one up there, and get it back down before I leave, but ... kind of a pain on a 12' high rig.

Anyway, shopping online for new house batteries, and generally just relaxing today.  Below are some pictures of the walk I took with Bella yesterday.  Finding beauty wherever I am, has become my favorite hobby.

Regarding your generator I did some searching and found this comment.

"The symptoms you describe (runs until you take your finger off the start button) are generally indicative of one (or more) of four things. They are, dirty or oxidized slip rings from non use, a bad voltage regulator, a bad circuit board, or a defective oil pressure switch. I would start by cleaning the slip rings."

You didn't get into much detail but if the generator runs until you let off the starter it could be one off these. Depending on the location it could be fairly easy to bypass the oil switch for a test. Just disconnect the two wires and find some way to tie them together electrically. If the motor hasn't been run in awhile it could take a few moments for it to get pressure up. Don't run beyond a test with the switch disconnected.

It doesn't seem to be a cause in this case but for future reference many (most?) RVs shut off fuel to the generator if the tank gets below 1/4 or so. This is to keep the generator from using all the fuel and stranding you.

What Make and Model is the Generator? There should be an 800# that you can call for help.

Thanks, Guy! It doesn't even run that long. It will still shut off with your finger on the switch, then the starter (?) starts making a horrible racket (like when you try to start your car when it's already running). It's an Onan 4000w generator, I don't recall the rest of it, and it's dark outside, but there is a Cummins West shop in West Sacramento that I might take it to so that I don't risk making the problem worse. I was hoping when I first tried to figure it out that the low fuel level was the problem, but I've tried with completely full tanks since then, and not had any luck.
