Regarding your generator I did some searching and found this comment.
"The symptoms you describe (runs until you take your finger off the start button) are generally indicative of one (or more) of four things. They are, dirty or oxidized slip rings from non use, a bad voltage regulator, a bad circuit board, or a defective oil pressure switch. I would start by cleaning the slip rings."
You didn't get into much detail but if the generator runs until you let off the starter it could be one off these. Depending on the location it could be fairly easy to bypass the oil switch for a test. Just disconnect the two wires and find some way to tie them together electrically. If the motor hasn't been run in awhile it could take a few moments for it to get pressure up. Don't run beyond a test with the switch disconnected.

It doesn't seem to be a cause in this case but for future reference many (most?) RVs shut off fuel to the generator if the tank gets below 1/4 or so. This is to keep the generator from using all the fuel and stranding you.
What Make and Model is the Generator? There should be an 800# that you can call for help.
