Hello All-
I took the plunge and finally bought a used RV to transition into tiny travel living. Here's the thing, though this has been a dream of mine for a long time and I've done tons of reading, I still feel like I have no idea what I'm doing. The goal is to build a loft that is like a pop-up to increase my living space but still be portable. Space is not really a requirement for me, but I do have 2 large breed dogs that require room to maneuver around. Anyways, I'll be going FT by the end of summer so I'm very excited to virtually meet you all and get going on this project.

Welcome Tanya. This forum is an awesome place to be. There are people here with expertise in any aspect of rv building and are very generous in sharing their knowledge. You're going to like it here.

Hi Tanya, welcome to the forum! We love pictures...and often a pic is the best way to get ideas across. There's a few methods to post pics and none are necessarily intuitive if you're not used to forums...just ask if any Q's

Building a loft can be a relatively simple carpentry project, but if your plan includes increasing overall height by penetrating the roof, it becomes orders of magnitude more difficult due to the need to keep rain on the outside on a semi-regular basis ;)

Welcome aboard Tanya!
You're in the right place to get yourself set up and a bunch of other stuff too !

Welcome to the CRVL forums Tanya! Congratulations on finding your new home! We need a little more information to give you helpful answers. What type and model of RV did you buy? Most are not constructed in a way that will allow you to cut large areas out of the roof. Photos are great so please post some if possible.

To help you learn the ins and outs of these forums, this "Tips & Tricks" post lists some helpful information to get you started. We look forward to hearing more from you.

I know what you mean.  I have watched scads of videos and read many articles about everything rv related and sometimes feel overwhelmed by how much there is to learn.  I even own a trailer and still have yet to learn how to do a dump of the waste water. I took one overnight trip sleeping in a van and the next trip with be for a few days with my partner.  I am hanging onto the idea that I will learn what I need to as time goes on and that actually living in a van or RV will be more instructive. I am most concerned about understanding how all the power systems will work especially solar. Anyway, good luck and happy trails.

OK
Generic , not all are exactly the same..
(You might want to hold your nose before reading this..............)
And hope you're sitting down , this will take way longer than doing it will !

Assuming you have a dump hose and know where the dump valve is........
(If you don't have a hose buy the heaviest ,most expensive one you can get your hands on ,,,,Rhino makes the one I have now ,,,,not a place to save pennies here !!!) A 10' or 15' will work for most places.

It's best to wait till the tank(s) are at least 3/4 full the level lights are very unreliable on most rigs
(look down the toilet with a flashlight and don't drop it ! ) the grey water will back up into the shower if it gets full.) Usually the grey will fill up way sooner.....

There are a couple of hints that you will learn to recognize after a few times,,, the toilet will burp and the shower drain will gurgle...time to dump ! If the grey isn't full when the black is run some water till it is or at least close.
This will come in handy later ....

Get some disposable gloves and have a bottle of Purell handy so you can clean up easily before you go back inside.

Make sure both the black (the 3" pipe) and the grey (the 1 1/2" or 2" pipe) valves are closed ,push in till they stop.

Put an old dish pan under the valve first then...Twist off the valve cap and make sure there isn't any liquid behind it....if there is one of your valves wasn't closed or leaks and now you know why you had the dish pan. If no leaks you won't need it next time,,,,well , maybe !
.
Twist one end of the dump hose to the valve opening and the other end goes into the dump station inlet.
(there are different adapters you can use on the dump station end if it has threads that help prevent leaks , if not there is a foam thing called a donut that will at least help with fumes. If no threads , have someone "hold" the end in place so it doesn't come out !!!! I sometimes use a couple of rocks or leveling boards but I've seen many variations ,,like a sock filled with sand. )

Make sure the hose ends are tight and slowly pull out the black tank valve handle till you hear the "water" flow till it is empty(at this point I like to go inside and fill and flush a few times to clean out the bottom of the tank and the valve blade area so I don't jam "anything in the valve which might lead to future leaks) ,,,close the valve and then open the grey tank valve , same procedure except without the extra flushing I i suppose you could run a sink full of water if you prefer. Just don't use any bleach it will kill all the good bacteria.....

Doing in this order will help rinse out the hose of leftover stuff from the black tank. Close that valve and carefully remove the hose from the valve end first . If the hose didn't go downhill all the way to the dump slowly lift the end and work your way to the other end till all the liquid flows out of it .

There are clear fittings you can get to help you see when it is done flowing and a few others you might find helpful like for flushing ... don't worry about what it looks like (,mostly like a lot of cocoa with maybe a little paper) . Skuh kuh kuh kuh just doesn't smell as good.

Some dump stations have a spigot and an old garden hose so you can rinse the hose and any leaks that might get away from you ! OhMyGoshk !

Now a cool hint , hang out near a dump station till someone else uses it and watch and ask any questions as they go through the process . If you're lucky they'll know what they are doing and will probably help you out too.
RVers are generally very friendly, just like vandwellers !!

Good luck and watch the movie RV after if you can !!!

There is an outfit in California that goes by the name "Ursa Minor".   They make these pop-up tops for 4 door Jeep's and Honda Elements.  ( tops are similar to the VW Van's)

You may contact them to see if they or any other companies make something similar for an RV.
