Some of you know me, and the fact that I recently "lost" my dog Taz, a beloved friend and companion.
Thankfully, I still have Lacy , who is also a real character and a great dog.  Today, I'm taking a drive to Pagosa Springs to look at a Australian Cattle Dog mix ; this dog looks very much like Lacy.  The difference is the patch over his RIGHT eye.  Lacy has a black one over her left eye!

I hope this works out.  Thoughts and prayers appreciated!   :)

I am just wondering if you will be taking Lacy to meet the new prospect or not. I always have mixed feelings about that, I didn't really like doing it as we tried once and the chaos of the shelter really stressed Rinnie as that was her "beginnings" and it is a stressful place. They do say the dogs should meet on "neutral" territory rather than the new dog just "invading" the "home" of the resident dog. Rinnie (chow-shepard) was 7 years old when we adopted Yellow Dog (lab) about the same age as Rinnie, we think. That have a unique relationship, sort of grew on one another, both female which we were advised against, but no problems. I call them "the Baldwin sisters" like from the Waltons, two aging old maids!

Good luck, and if this isn't the right one, he/she is out there as there are so many waiting for that right home. I LOVE herding dogs!

Herding dogs are the BEST! (My whole life: a Border Collie mix, a Sheltie mix, two Belgian Tervuren, and a Belgian Sheepdog.)

Congratulations!

LOL, I dont know if herding dogs are the BEST ;) My Shepherd/Sheltie mix always wants everyone to be in the same room which is fine when it is just the two of us. When I have guests over, she tries to herd everyone into the same room which admittedly is cute at first but it gets old fast.

Pat, congratulations on your new traveling companion.

Ok, now that you have the new dog, get back up here and get it Max the wonder puppy approved.

Taz will be missed, he was a fine dog. I really enjoyed the time I spent with him. Along with Lacy and yourself of course.

Glad to hear that you are looking for a new dog and congrats if you have found one.

Please let me know if you find yourself out here on the left coast.

Happy trails and waggin' tails

It turned out tragically. ..

It will be a while till I can talk about it.

Thanks for asking.

Let's give this a try.

I got Hank and Lacy home that night.  I very STUPIDLY let Hank and Lacy out of the 5th wheel I've been staying in after breakfast the next morning; it was still dark.  Hank was gone.  Later on, I saw him, and he took off running away from me.  Later that day, he killed 6 chickens at a neighboring ranch.   Local Animal Control came out and wrote me a citation, I agreed to pay $200 for the dead chickens.  This area around here is like a patchwork quilt of ranch land; I got all kinds of cuts from barbed wire trying to catch Hank.  But he took off running everytime anyone came near him.  My friend and I tried to entice him back grilling hot dogs outside (I was told he liked hot dogs)  ... the next day he was shot and killed by a rancher while he was trying to attack their chickens.

He's now buried out here in the country.

So,  I've been beating myself up for the STUPID mistake I made by letting him out off-leash.  I can NOT for the life of me understand why I did that.  It was a severe brain fart by me.  So, I have a load of guilt ... on top of losing Taz to cancer.

I lost 2 dogs in less than 2 months.

So sorry to hear that Pat.

*sigh*

It's hard to be human sometimes. Don't beat yourself up, mate.

Hi Pat,
So sorry to hear this news about both dogs. Unfortunately mistakes happen and the consequences can be mild to severe, the world doesn't really discriminate in that arena. I adopted a dog a bit over a year ago and he almost suffered a similar fate for making the same mistake......attacked neighbors chickens, was shot at, and then almost run over as he ran away across a highway. I tried to get him used to being off leash right away because all my dogs have always been off leash dogs. However, it didn't dawn on me until after it all occurred that all my other dogs started as puppies not full grown as he was.

It will take some time but cut yourself a little slack if possible, everything you did was for the benefit of the dog....from rescuing him to allowing him a life off leash. Hindsight is 20/20.
